Order Of Operations

Hey guys, I was just wondering how everyone does their editing.


I currently record with a GoPro and edit with Vegas.


I import my GoPro videos and convert them in GoPro Studio, and then I edit and render with Vegas.. Is it necessary to convert them in Studio? Or could I just take the raw GoPro footage and edit it directly in Vegas for similar (or better) quality?

I use a drift, and I move the .mov files directly into my iMovie so it does it all for me.

Drift to premiere pro, slice and add the adjustments on at the end, colour, curves and sharpening.

I use a Drift HD 1080 and edit everything in Sony Vegas Pro 11.

If Vegas will take the raw, do it. No point converting, wastes time and could risk quality.

I just load direct into Movie Studio [budget Vegas].

Try and drag drop the raw footage into Vegas - if it takes it like a champ, then you can skip the Studio step.

That sounds like way too much effort
Although, it's got me tempted to try it... [I also do photography, so it's something I'm used to]

The camera records in .mp4 using h.264 compression.

I've tried to take the files directly to Vegas, but when I watch the preview it doesn't look good at all.. would this be something that is fixed while rendering?

What's the preview quality set to?
There's a menu above the preview window, which I think is - by default - set to Draft Auto. This is just it spitting out the video without doing any real processing behind it, to give you an idea of what it'll look like
You can change this to get a better idea.

Thinking, to be honest, if you have any preview, it should be safe to just use it.
Best thing to do - do a short clip, and export it. See how it looks

Yeah, I think I'll make a 30 second clip or so done each way and see how they turn out. I've never been into the digital photography deal so I'm not very familiar with the file types and compression or whatever..

It's no effort at all. I gots me some presets and I just throw them on adjustment layers on top of the footage

Alright guys, I managed to get my test done today.

The quality is very comparable.

Processing through Studio and then through Vegas gave me a bit better quality.
Dropping the raw clips into Vegas and then editing from there produced a SLIGHTLY less desired clip.

After uploading to YouTube, the quality difference probably won't even be noticeable, but I'm going to continue to run it through Studio and then editing the processed studio clips in Vegas. As it only would save me about 10 - 15 mins per video (I generally use this time to do other things, so it's really no more/less of a burden)

The best quality I managed to produce was actually just producing straight from GoPro studio, but it's a shame that I really dislike editing in that program.

If i have the time i record with my Sony As30v (used to have a drift) and then use Premier pro to do a 'straight' conversion using apple prores codecs. This gives a massive file and takes ages but the result is super fast editing with high quality previews as there is less compression in the video file.

If i dont have time/space/cant be arsed, then i just jam the files out of the camera and straight into premiere.

I've recently dropped all of my extra cameras and external sound recorder as it was just too much effort to sync everything at the start of a ride.

Now I just ride with the camera off, and turn it on when I fancy recording something. It's very liberating!
