One issue after another... constantly... but I won't let it discourage me

So maybe (maybe?) I'm dumb, but is there a difference between recording audio on your phone from an external mic, and recording directly on the GoPro with an external mic?
for mic placem, ent no, for quality, depends on the gopro, software, or audio recorder, some work great with some mics, others dont.

in editing, on a gopro, you wont need to sync the first camera, but with any external audio you will, thats the only real diffrence other than potential quality diffrence which has too many variables.

Then I need some pointers! My current setup is the PP mic plugged into the Media Mod on my GoPro Hero 8, and taped to the SENA mic boom. The wind noise is definitely not good enough. I downloaded Audacity, since HitFilm Express doesn't do audio editing (that I've found, anyway), and I just don't know what I'm doing!

you might need to experement a fair bit, a fair few people have them right up against the cheak pad on the left or right, but depends on your helmet style, also chin curtains n other things can affect it. i have allways found that they help. chin vents can creat a lot of wind noise. dead cats/foamys also can help.

I have a half helmet, so no chin bar or cheek pads - this is probably the #1 reason I want tmagness to chime in - dude rides without a helmet and still has phenomenal audio.

Looks like the weather will be nice tomorrow, so as long as the replacement foamies show up, I'll get out on my bike and play around with settings and vents and stuff. Gotta remember to bring my lapel clips with me ;)

What do you do after that, somehow sync the audio and the video up in post ? You do this vs a mic into your GoPro ?
Aye, on my last trackday I was using 6 different camera angles in each session, and the voice recorder. So to sync them all up I do 3 claps at each end of the bike, then use the 3 audio spikes from those claps to align everything together. It is quite simple, at least with the editing software I use. Advantage of using a voice recorder is the cameras can stay sealed up and waterproof.

But where do you put your voice recorder, and is it waterproof itself?

I agree, through HitFilm Express or DaVinci Resolve at least, syncing up audio and video is quite trivial. I did not try it in VSDC, so I can't speak to that one.

With 6 cameras onboard, did you use the GoPro Smart Remote to start recording at the same time at least? That would help in post, I imagine, as all the videos would be at least close to synced up, then just add the audio.

I put the voice recorder in my inside pocket of my leather suit, I've used it in the past for road motovlogging in the rain when my mic adapter died, I just put it in a plastic food bag in my pocket, not had it get wet yet.
I was actually only using 4 cameras, but 3 of them were 360 cameras so I used 2 edits from the OneX and the One R to give a front and rear view. I can't use the GoPro remote (I don't have one, but also I imagine it wouldn't work for the Insta360 cameras, just the GoPro Hero 8 and GoPro Max. For future trackdays I am not even going to bother with the Hero 8 as the footage from the Max, the One X and One R works better in this setup for me as the angles work better with the 360 cameras and the horizon lock.

I should really consider something like that. I HATE full face helmets!

I do too! My first couple of years of riding were with a full-face, but I could never find one that fit right - they always gave me a hot spot on my forehead after 5-30 minutes of wearing it. My half helmet is now 8 years old and is the only one I've found that fits me and doesn't give me hot spots (except for the aforementioned headache with the GoPro hanging off the side and the strap not tight enough - oops!).

I keep looking for other half helmets, 3/4, or modular helmets that fit, but have yet to find any. "Long Oval" is my head shape... I say I have the head of an Alien LOL.
