On A Cruise Ship

I just got back from an amazing vacation with the wife. We took a Carnival cruise ship to Progresso, Mexico, then to Cozumel. While at the ports we had a lot of fun touring Mayan ruins and exploring the cities. However, while on the boat, I began to understand why people hate Americans lol. Most of the crew is made up of people from all around the world and they were all very friendly. I can't say the same for the overfed, newlywed, or nearly dead Americans though. Most of the passengers treated the crew like slaves. It made me want to personally apologize to all crew and say not all Americans are like that.

It really gets on my nerves when people treat service personnel like that. I just got back from Germany and Amsterdam. My German is OK for getting around but I can only read an say a few phrases in Dutch. I find that as long as I make an effort and treat people with respect, I get the same in return, even if I do sound like an idiot. When I go to Europe, I try and blend in as much as possible so I don't normally find myself around a lot of other Americans, unless I'm doing something touristy. I also practice something I learned from being in the Masons, which is I don't discuss things like religion or politics, unless someone has a legitimate question about American politics that they would like to know. When people find out I'm from Texas, they will invariably ask how many guns I have, but I make it clear that However we do things in Texas is OK for there and I have no interest in trying to bring those things everywhere I go.

Regardless of what country you happen to be in, it's amazing how much benefit will be returned to you if you treat people with respect. This is especially true when someone else is making their best effort to be a total dickhead.

I never took a cruise until 2008. The Mediterranean, it was one of the best vacations of my life. 2 weeks, going from Barcelona to Turkey and back. Never did notice assholeism by Americans. Actually, quite the opposite. Everyone was super cool on that boat.

This is the second one I've ever been on. The first one was really fun and everyone was pretty cool. For some reason though most of the people one this one were pushy and flat out rude. I'm generally a laid back, open-minded person (awkward, but nice lol) so I can usually get along with anyone.

We went to Mexico on this one, I know a decent amount of Spanish. Even though I sounded like an idiot sometimes, the locals were still really happy to hear me try.

I will forever try to avoid being stuck on a boat at sea with thousands of people I don't know.

Gotta agree with you on that one. Plus I'm paranoid from all the weird wrecks and crazy shit I keep seeing on the news involving cruise ships. It was made worse when my boss when on a Mexico cruise and his ship got stuck in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico for 3 days. I did always want to do the Norwegian Fjord cruise, however.

I'd like to go on one of those Viking cruises in Europe. Those boats look smaller and more manageable. Plus it's mostly river cruises so you aren't that far from shore. I would lose my mind if I was on a boat that got stuck like your boss' boat did. Certifiably crazy.

I saw some of those Viking Cruise boats on the Main and Rhein rivers when I was in Germany. They looked pretty decent and they tour guide mentioned that he thought they were pretty good.

I'm not sure I'd like a cruise to be honest. The thought of being stuck on a boat, even if big send shivers down me, or up me.

I'm sure there is lots to do but I like my own space

Alcohol helps lol. We were only at sea one day at a time so it wasn't all that bad. I don't know if I could stand much longer because get bored too easily.

I know what you mean, the option to go and do something else is a requirement for me.

I've been here and there and I'll say American's aren't as despised as heavily as a few other nationalities...I'm not saying we're in the clear by any means though :D
