Oil Change Headache

Hi. Having issues with my bike. Just bought a used bike Hyosung GT125 Comet 2004. Had the bike for a couple of weeks due to tax and insurance etc, all sorted now. So i have not taken the bike out for a ride anyways the oil is not visible in the veiw glass. So i decided to change the oil myself as i do not know what oil the previous owner put in i can't just top it up with another oil. Tried to loosen the oil plug took me 3-4 hours trying to open it but no luck as my wrench broke in the end. The bolt itself is 21mm must be one of those special bolts that would stop any leaking. As i just checked on ebay OEM drain plug 14mm. Is there anyway to get the oil out of the bike ie electric pumps anygood. Thanks

Do you have an electric pump? If not, the cost is likley to be quite prohibitive and a much cheaper thing would be to take the bike to your nearest mechanic and get them to remove the bolt and do a change. Cheaper still, just get them to loosen it, but get the right bolt and washer. Hopefully they won't tell you the previous owner has welded it in

Electric pump cost £15. Would cost too much money for the mechanic as the oil is very low do not want to ride it as can cause further damage (checked the oil filter and it was just black even the oil), but if i tip the bike i can see the oil still looks new (gold). Ive just checked on youtube and the electric pump seems to be ok. Maybe i can use the electric pump and then put in new oil and filter for now so atleast i can ride it for now. Been sitting in my shed for 7 weeks.

Just managed to open the oil plug. Put a pole on the spanner and it opened without much force. No need for pumps thanks for the help. Plus just watched your vlog on YouTube on oil. Thanks

Thanks for the video does help. Qiuck question about type of oil.
Bought 10w40 ultimate performance 4L £39.99. As that was the only oil available in store. As i don't think ill be racing this bike everyday. Is this oil still suitable for the bike. As it can take either 10w30/10w40.

I use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 15w50. It's not motorcycle oil, just the regular one, but I've seen some independent tests where that one performed better in both bikes and cars than actual motorcycle oil, in terms of retaining viscosity after 1000 miles. I haven't had a problem in either bike I've used it in. 50w might be a little stiff for UK though. It gets a lot hotter down here in Texas so 10w40 may be the way to go for you.

Didnt know about diesel oil. Boer maak n plan ne

Also, make sure you drain it properly. cant mix synthetic and regular...

What about your clutch? apparently car oil fucks it up propper

I've never seen any data about damage from using car oil so I can't say for sure. I know all bikes are a little different as to what oil is best. I used a blended oil in my old Ducati, because I was told a full synthetic could cause clutch slippage. In my Triumph I used the Mobil-1 full synthetic car oil and never had an issue. My current bike has a dry clutch so any oil would be bad. As far as the engine, I haven't noticed anything weird. If you're not sure and not willing to test it on yourself, just use motorcycle oil and don't worry about it.

It should say what weight to use in your manual. You can usually find them online or in a bike specific forum. I use motorcycle oil just to play it safe. I use Valvoline 20w-50

Iv spent the last 6 year just chucking any 10W40 in my bikes I dont even read the lable if its 10w40 it will be fine! and after a total of 185,000 miles on 3 bike all is well.

thats not that much, i do about 2300 a month, just work and back. Then add in the fun rides, its another 1000-2000 a year for that
