An operation to reduce the number of deaths and injuries involving motorcyclists on Derbyshire roads is being launched on Good Friday.

The annual Operation Focus, funded by the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership, will run until September.

There were 136 motorcyclists killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads last year compared to 94 the previous year.

Officers hope to reduce this figure by encouraging riders to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.

Police will patrol the 13 roads where collisions are most common, which include the A5012 Via Gellia, A57 Snake Pass and the A6 between Ambergate and Buxton.

The partnership will also host an event for bikers on Easter Sunday, April 8, at Matlock Bath’s Pavillion car park. Between 1pm and 4pm, motorcyclists will be able to pick up a free safety guide and find out more about BikeSafe workshops.

Head of Roads Policing, Chief Inspector Steve Wilson, said: “We are absolutely committed to keeping people safe on the roads of Derbyshire.

“We’re not trying to catch bikers out. We want them to come to our county and enjoy our roads but most of all, we want them to ride sensibly and safely.

“Too many riders are becoming involved in serious collisions, many of which are avoidable. We would urge bikers to ride within their abilities and take the opportunity to enhance their skills through training such as BikeSafe; a nationally recognised and accredited scheme run by the police.”

The routes being monitored as part of Operation Focus this year are
A 5012 Via Gellia.
A61 Higham to Wingerworth
A5004 Long Hill, Buxton to Fernilee.
A6 Buxton to Ambergate.
A 621 Baslow to Owler Bar.
A52 Markeaton Island to Mayfield.
A619 Bakewell to Chesterfield.
A57 Snake Pass.
A 515 Newhaven to Buxton.
A623 Peak Forest to Stoney Middleton.
A 632 Matlock to Chesterfield.

Better roads are in the Dales anyway. Police waiting on a corner, sounds like a bad idea to me.

Not necessarily, at least they give advanced warning and are making an effort to educate others. This stuff appeals more positively than negatively to me anyways.

Be aware in the beacons police will use sleeper vehicles (nissan micra, fiat panda, etc... You overtake, they radio ahead and you'll have a copper standing in the road calling you in a mile on) And helicopters (measure time over a distance) to catch you.

Along with the usual undercover biker cops.

Not saying they do this in the peak district but definitely something to be aware of.

They also hide in side streets out of sight from the main road. You blast past doing more than the typical traffic, again radio ahead and you'll get nabbed.

Personally I'm for it, far too many power rangers out there looking for an early death. If you want a race track, go to a race track imo.
