Hi all,

I recently brought a Sena Prism Tube WIFi, after 10 days of testing and 2 cameras it’s proven the battery doesn’t last long enough for how I intend to use it.

I’m returning the camera hence looking for an alternative.

I think I’ll go for a GoPro 7 black unless anyone recommends something different to look at.

My query is around what mic to use in my helmet. I saw the excellent post stuck to the top of this forum but I’m still a little confused which mic to get, I understand I will need a mic adapter. If anyone is able to post some links to the mic’s you use that would be great.

Also what helmet mounts do you use, the standard GoPro one ? There are so many options on Amazon... I think I’d like to try the camera mounted in from of my mouth to start with.

Cheers

Hey @Leigh I use this microphone with all my GoPro cameras:

Have you had any issue with breaking this mic, Hippo? I bought one and the mic literally fell off the wire and wire sheathing the first 5 minutes I had it. And when I requested a replacement, they refunded me instead. Which is fine, but I did want to try the mic again just to have direct audio recording along with my secondary audio.

I've had them breakdown over time, but not fall apart except when I was being ham-fisted with it. I actually pull it apart to use it, I take off the big end cap and then use a small amount of amalgamating tape to hold the mic into the housing, leaving the cap off but then put the foam back on and use amalgamating tape to hold that on too. When I ordered mine I ordered quite a few at once so I can leave it in each helmet rather than having to swap everything over when I wear a different helmet.

Hi all,

It seems the GoPro mic adapter is out of stock in the uk, so I won’t be able to get one straight away.

I will definitely get one as I like to have the official products.

In the meantime would a usb c to 3.5 adapter work or is there something extra in the GoPro adapter other than the option of a usb input?

Cheers

Hi Leigh. Just like FloridaMan, I stuck(glued?) the go pro mounting plate to my helmet using Sugru. I used Sugru specifically because I wanted the camera to be mounted by my chin for that awesome first person view :D. It also looks very clean. Attached to the mounting plate is my Hero 5 Session which is attached with a J style hook.

As for audio, have you thought about using an external audio recorder?

I'm selling my Gopro Hero 5 Black edition & the expensive adaptor plus a robe mic. It became a battle of internet searching on all sorts of sites to find answers not just to find what works (as GoPro were rubbish) but yes the only way you can get a mic to work is through the official GoPro adaptor $95 AUD plus a decent microphone - but make sure you get the correct microphone, there are a couple of different types of the 3.5mm ( https://www.cablechick.com.au/blog/understanding-trrs-and-audio-jacks/ ) .... it does actually work well audio wise (watch my channel intro) however it makes the whole set up bulky and I've had a few issues, I had to tape everything to death as the wind noise over the connections was horrendous, with the lack of info on how to use certain aspects of it, it became a pain in my arse. You can't do a quick start and go out straight away as the mic won't work, you have to power it up then press go or the audio doesn't work, bizarrely - not easy with gloves on. The mic - I basically tucked in behind a cheek pad and rolled up all the cable in the lining of the helmet.

Along with the glitchy software, the camera powering down, the batteries (I've got two) not holding charge when not in use and not lasting long in use, I gave it up. Hence it's for sale. I probably won't be able to sell it on here now after such a glowing report. I wanted a simpler alternative and now have the Drift Ghost X - it is simple, looks great, a bit antiquated (which I like) cheaper and big battery life. I bought the GoPro long before I started this vlogging lark, so no sleep lost.

So for what it's worth I reckon we can do decent enough YouTubing for less. I'm very happy so far with my drift.

Sold my Hero5 Black today, ...... I'm considering a dual camera set up. Looking at an additional camera with the cash to clone my Ghost X. Should make for some learnings. However, the bike is off to repair shop soon after my rear ender. Not happy to be sans ride :-( .... hopefully not out of the loop too long!
