Could actually be the other way round if you look at the English dialect way back when. Things like daiper are an old English word, and nappy is very recent.
Sidewalk is technically more accurate as pavement means paved, which British sidewalks used to be, but are becoming more commonly asphalt.
Not sure how the spelling differences came about, nor who is correct about a certain lightweight metal that's extracted from Bauxite...
