DaVinci Resolve is going to be the most capable free software available regardless of OS (Win/Mac). After that, if you are looking to spend money, my preference is Adobe Premier Pro.

Key is to pick an application and stick with it and learn it. Jumping from app to app will warrant you nothing but frustration.

DaVinci resolve 15 is excellent and free BUT needs a powerful computer 16+ Gb Ram and very good graphics card, all the requirements and downloads can be found on their website - Blackmagic Design. I've been using it for a couple of years now but only at a very basic level.

I use Hitfilm express. It's a step up from Windows Movie Maker and has all the neat tools in it to create any creative edits you have in mind.

I use Wondershare Filmora 9. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. It's free to try out, then you have to pay for it if you want advanced features and no watermarks.
I really like Wondershare, really simple and functional.

iMovie was great for basic stuff, Filmora is really good too if you can get past the watermark.
I recently started using LumaFusion on the iPad, it was $20 and is pretty easy to use.

I've mainly been Premiere Pro. I did get a key given to me for free so I can't complain. Though I have been using Da Vinci Resolve. Both full fledged editors and can they both are very campble but there isn't that much difference between the two. There is plenty of tutorials on both. I'm mainly using Reslove these days
