Motovlogging and Subtitles???

Hey all,

What's your general impression of motovlogs that use subtitles instead of talking? Is it ok to watch or does it throw you off??? I know of one vlogger who does it - RoyalJordanian ... for the most part he doesn't talk. Anyways...

I really don't see the point in subtitles instead of talking, why not just write a blog instead? From a viewers perspective, you can't really concentrate on reading what it says and watching the video footage (or at least I can't!)

Subtitles alongside speech (like an afterthought addition in editing) is fine though.

RJ tends to do a clear frame caption, thus not distracting the viewer. You're also aware of what's coming rather than commentary after the event or needing a replay.

Not really a motovlog at this point and more so a motoblog. It's okay to use it as an additive but not to replace talking entirely.

Some people are good at talking, and some aren't. And some think they are, but they're not. If your focus is on what happens while you are riding and you have captions to frame the clip coming up, like RoyalJordanian, it works a treat.

Yeah, my problem is that my voice is awful... I even hate listening to it. Sometimes I get called "ma'am" on the phone ~_~ . The second thing is that I have somewhat of a stage fright... my 10th Grade English teacher gave it to me in high school - weird lady (once told the class about beating her breasts while watching a play in New York... weird !). Doesn't have much to do with being behind a camera but it put me on the spot, so good enough . Combine the two and you get minced meat...

I've taken down the four vlogs I've previously posted on YouTube and am thinking about taking this different approach. Probably give it a try and see where it goes.....

A bit of text now and then, yeah... but not an essay

The best way is a bit of text on a stopped image of the video to point something out we might not of seen

I think it depends on the kind of video you're trying to make me watch. Some are random vlogs, rants, things about the life of the vlogger, day-to-day stuff that you're better listening and the video is the engaging complement to it. You can cut the video or run it in the background and it will still make sense.
Some styles like RJ aren't exactly a vlog. He rarely speaks but he doesn't use "subtitles", just intro texts or something and that fits.
Now, there are some special videos that I call "Ride with me" that you can get away with just engine noise and it will get engaging anyways because the content is interesting. Live-Vlogging on those is a bonus and subtitling will definitely be a turnoff.

might want to try a dual vlog type thing with ur buddy that way its more like talking to him and u just happen to have the cam on. like what YourPalsChrisAndAl, dafobra and marks4303, the fak fak guys etc. just get out there and have some fun we dont judge (to much evil laugh hahahahaha jk). i wonder if theres any voice editing u could do to ur voice if you dont like what u sound like. make urself sound like darth vader or something.

especially when they slow the sound down too... That noise

lightitup - Yeah, I tried voice editing... even got my audio engineer wife on it , but it made my tin-can helmet sound even more tinny. I'm also a lone rider (as of right now), so don;t have anyone I could dual-vlog with like YourPalsChrisAndAl (crazy couple of kids !)...
