Motovlog Content

Lion's Grip
Hey guys,

I knew that I was going to offend people with some of my content, but I still have to ask. When would you say humor becomes offensive.

Since I'm a new vlogger I figured I would try to be a little edgy to stand out of the crowd. I'm not a professional, so I'm probably not capable of walking that line very well. Personally I thought that since I was making fun of every type of person, everyone would realize I'm only joking. However, I got this email today. Just so you guys know. He already banned me once for posting my first vlog even though other people posted theirs. That's why I sent him the first email.

I'm sure most will say that there will always be someone who doesn't like it and you have all gone through it, but at the same time I want to make people laugh. Just trying to lighten things up not bring people down.

This was my reply. I think it was fair.

Thanks for the input guys.

Erm.... I have a warped sense of humour but I don't feel the need to be racist and quite frankly, I don't want it on this site.

I'm not sure of the purpose of this thread.

I've seen a lot of vloggers and the ones that try and stand out, fail

Not trying to be racist and I wouldn't post any jokes on the site. Just wanted to get feedback on the content. All my friends in the military joked around like this and I just wanted an outside opinion.

I'm not making fun of people, I'm trying to make fun of stereotypes and wanted to see if it was coming off wrong. I thought other people would like to post questions and comments about video content as well. If you think the thread is useless I understand. Could you delete it for me.

Thanks buddy. I'm hoping others do as well. I'm making the video in an attempt to make people laugh a little at me and themselves. If in trying to accomplish that, I end up hurting peoples feelings than I'm doing it wrong and need to rethink my content. That's why a fresh view from you guys helps. :)

man the thing i noticed is your actually good at motovlogging, your edits are great and off the bike filming is great, so to be honest you can stand out without having to be "to edgy" like the blacked out van you spotted and your humor about it cracked me up, the thing is the internet is full of side winders that can boost it into a negative direction very fast! but if your ok with that go for it and just argue "well look at shows like family guy", that is prime example that this has been done before, they poke fun at different races and religions but the difference is there backed by lawyers, money and demand... so you are a natural from what I see but do you need to get edgy with different skin type humor to stand out? i don't think so... I actually think you will go alright just being you rather than over firing a touchy line

Thanks for the insight. E.B.Bars. I'm sure it will evolve over time. That type of humor is what I'm used to from hanging out with my friends. It's just different when you're joking around with strangers. My friends pull out the redneck cracker jokes all the time and I guess it grew on me.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's normal for me, but I think others would view it as "edgy". It's probably best if I stop trying to please everyone and just do my thing. Those that get it will laugh. You guys should see the things I cut out:)

Thanks for the compliments. Making videos is a lot harder than it looked and I appreciate what you guys do even more now.

I liked the vid (but felt uncomfortable with a few bits).. i think the problem is if it makes the watcher feel uncomfortable ,i got the angle you were coming from but like social media unless you set it up with explanations then a lot of people see things the wrong way (power of media) it would be much easier to leave that sort of content out and just be known for the quality of the rest

Yeah that's why I tried to throw in the movie clips to give it a bit of context. I hear you though. That's why I posted the thread. I felt a little uncomfortable with those same parts, but I wanted to viewer to feel that and laugh at it.

Just like many of you I'm trying to convey a certain emotional response, but it will develop over time. I'll keep it to a minimum until I get the formula down. Thanks again Mr fish. This may be a good topic for the next vid.

So here are my two cents. (I only saw the videos after you re-posted) You have a great talent for editing. Your cuts to movie scenes/commercials felt very natural and funny. As far as your content or "character" idea if you want to call it that:

1) trying to stand out in the motovlogging world by making fun of every person you see, making sex/rape jokes, etc. will hardly make you stand out in the motovlogging world if that is indeed what you are going for.

2) I respect vloggers who may say controversial things but can actually back that up with some type of reasoned argument. Saying something "controversial" for the sake of it to make a splash and then backing out of it as "just joking" is something I would not be interested in watching. Racism, homophobia, and misogyny are far from edgy anyway.

3) Racial satire is a very delicate line to walk. The way it reads to me, is more like you are probably a white male with some money (judging by your customization of your bike) and you are claiming to satirize racism, but in actuality you are just coming from a culturally homogenous background that tolerated or encouraged picking on minority groups because they could get away with it. NOW that may totally NOT be who you are as a person. That may be totally off-base from your reality. But I'm just telling you how it comes off to me. White guys who say "I make fun of red necks too" or "I'm just joking, relax I'm not racist"...well, I'll just say I've heard that many times before and in my experience it never rang true.

Anyway. You'll find your groove and your audience. Just remember that alienating people may not be the foot you want to start off on. Goodluck!

Thanks Kill Kitty I appreciate the help.

I'm not necessarily doing it to stand out. It's just my sense of humor. I was thinking of cutting it out to reach a wider audience, but thought that by leaving it in I could provide something different.

As for "White guys who say "I make fun of red necks too" or "I'm just joking, relax I'm not racist"...well, I'll just say I've heard that many times before and in my experience it never rang true"

IMO this is a double standard. I feel that if anyone other than a white guy said those jokes it would be acceptable. The way I see it a joke is a joke no matter who says it, but I see your point. The difference is that I feel as a white guy I have to say it's just a joke, because racial humor from that class is automatically considered racist, which is a racist stereotype. lol:)

Like I said I may talk about it in the next vlog. Thanks a bunch for the input. Again it is a big help.

By they way I know this is a controversial topic and I just wanted to say I appreciate the members and the forum for talking about it.

I didn't agree with the Starbuck #racetogether campaign, but I do think it needs to be talked about. Didn't mean to do it here, but thanks for allowing it. I got the general feel from you guys and will talk about it in my next vlog.

Thanks again and have a great week everyone.

Wow, You are a great and natural motovlogger, BUT, I would never sub your channel after seeing THAT video, You do not need to make those kind of jokes for attention.
I know its just your sense of humour and thats fine (I have a similar sense of humour), However, I would never post the way I talk with friends on Youtube as it WILL offend.
I think you will do a lot better if you just refrain from posting those types of jokes as unfortunately this is the politically correct bullshit world we live in.

I hear you. Again I'm going to do a blog about this next week. It may be better to talk about it that way instead of here. I would rather get my channel spammed, instead of this forum. Don't want to junk up the forum with offensive thread. I'll clear up my view on the issue Friday. I doubt everyone will agree, but the one thing people know about me is that I try my best to be honest and straight. Even if it's controversial.

ive not watched it yet but im glad people are all chipping in. I agree with alot of what is being said and by the sounds of it you have some great talent for motovlogging. So roll with it, your channel will grow naturally with just you being you :) but id never speak how i do with my friends on youtube, way too wrong haha :D ill have a look later buddy :)

Thanks bud. Everyone here has been great with the help on critiquing the vid and giving input. It is a big help for a new vlogger. IMO there is only one joke that is questionable and it was a joke on a stereotype. I put in some movie clips to play it down even more, but I guess it still didn't work for some.

The other two jokes weren't half as bad and the only reason I took them out was time limit in the vid. If I keep them in and put clips to go with it would be too long. I plan on putting them in the next vid when I talk about it.

I know that a lot of people talk one way with their friends and another way in public, but I could never do that. I don't say anything with intent to harm or with hatred. If I can't say something to a person's face then I won't say it behind their back. That is the only standard I use to gauge if it is appropriate. Thanks again Matt and I value your opinion, so by all means let me know!

Ironic that you have Jeremy Clarkson in the signature. lol.

Hey there,

Before I say anything else, your voice reminds me of Badger from Breaking Bad. And your laugh? Perfect. That said, I read this thread, watched your content, and had to re-read the thread just to make sure you're the same person. Your posts on here are sincere, articulate, and you seem genuinely interested in other people's input. Your content on the other hand is excessively inappropriate. I understand you're stepping outside the box in order to differentiate from the masses, but I'm not sure alienating such a large swath of potential fans is the way to go. Having read the thread first, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and didn't X out of the video inside the first 30 seconds.

So, your content stirred up controversy. This much is true. It got me to visit your YouTube channel and watch 15 minutes of cheap jokes pandering to the the lowest common denominator. Did it get me to subscribe, no. Eventually will people stumble upon that content and subscribe? Sure. I'm not sure you want to build a fan base comprised of a demographic that finds racist statements, loosely veiled behind a joke, funny. Even if I did find it funny, I wouldn't subscribe because of the connotations that accompany the subscription. Lastly, it's one thing to make jokes on fringe topics as a comic on stage, it's another to do it anonymously behind a face shield.

I'm sure you're wondering why I've sunken so much time into this, so here's a little insight as to why this topic resonated with me. I used to preform quite a bit of standup comedy- everywhere from Tucson to New York City. Over the years I met a lot of comics. Some were good, some were bad. Some should've made it, and some shouldn't have. In comedy there are always the people who think shock humor is the way to stand out. In my experience, not once did one of those comics make it out of the open mic circuit.

What I'm saying is this: Get people to like you first, then push the envelope. It's easier to adapt and grow with your audience when they're with you.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but those are my thoughts! Take them with a grain of salt and don't compromise your vision if you don't see fit.

Dave

I felt a little uncomfortable with those same parts, but I wanted to viewer to feel that and laugh at it.
My rule of thumb is... if I feel uncomfortable with whatever I'm going to be putting out there, then most likely everyone else will be uncomfortable with it, too ;) . Go with what your gut says to do/not do... in the end, if followed, then all should be good ;) .

That's all I'll say about that (as Forrest Gump would say :p ~).....

HeresDave: Thanks Dave for the thoughtful comment. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Even if it was equal to reading War and Peace:) It is an important topic and I needs to be address. I'm just not sure that this is the forum. (not pun intended). If the members and moderators don't mind that's fine, but I think my next vlog will address my view better than I could write here.

I will say I agree with some of your insight I just don't think this is pandering to the lowest common denominator. I think this is a societal issue that a majority of people deal with. As far as hiding behind mask. Not really. I lot of motovloggers do this. The reason I do it is probably the same as others. Viewers can connect easier if they can use their imagination a bit. This is the main reason people like the book over the movie. Once you put a face to a character it takes away a part of viewer interaction and imagination.

RoninK6: I agree Ronin. I just didn't feel uncomfortable with the joke. That's why I asked comments in order to reevaluate my perspective. I try my best not to be closed minded and realize that I can be wrong and try to adjust. After thinking about it I have to say that I don't think it was bad. Mostly because my black friends (yes I do have them) didn't see a problem. In fact the only people that seemed to find it offensive were white people, which is telling to me.

Thanks again to all of you for the advise. Especially the pro comic. I'm no where near a pro and went down an entirely separate career path, so hearing your perspective on comedic tone was insightful. I don't think my next vlog will change anyones perceptive, but hopefully make it easier to understand the direction I'm taking. Thanks again.
