Yup, although we're lacking a full story, of course. The Police I'm sure would have tried to offer him a foxed penalty, a couple of points and a fine, but if he argued with them, plus failure to turn up to court, then the whole issue compounds and they go from the "basic" penalty to an increased one, normally because you're not accepting that you are in the wrong.

I'd probably heard a guess that cutting across the truck didn't help his cause, if he'd not done that, I could imagine that he'd have had a lower charge.

All speculation. The full video, police commentary and rider's response would have let the public make their mind up as to what was fair or not, but to me if the bike could get round the car with ease then the car should have been in that inside lane.

You are all perfectly right, this is bull, but lets not forgot that the rider was a no show at court time. The police could have said anything and the judge would only have to listen and agree with them. No argument from the rider came into consideration. They just through the book at him.
