I've saw many close calls like that in Beijing... luckily I was not one of them ! The problem in both countries - too many people, too narrow of roads ~.....

...and no enforcement of traffic regulations .

that and the lets say to easy way to get your hands on a lisence... having one doesn't mean that you actually can drive let alone aware of your surroundings... but i think that's a Asian phenomenon in general.
