Michelin Pilot Road 3 - My Impressions

First off tire or tyre... its the same thing so no telling me I can not spell. Because I know I cant :)

Replaced my tires recently on my Er-6f / Ninja 650, I was running a Bridgestone BT021 on the front and a BT023 on the rear. The BT021 was a bad tire and never felt planted and by the time it reached about 6000 miles it was knackered with a dangerous wear pattern. The BT023 while better than the BT021 didn't have a 'safe' level of grip unless the tire was nice and warmed up. So I could only push my riding on warm sunny days after riding a good 5 miles or so first to warm the tires up.

Now there were plenty of choices out there to what set of tires to get next but after a bit or reading / research and being honest with myself I opted for the Michelin Pilot Road 3 tires.

Why?
Well they are said to have plenty of grip in the wet and I ride all year round rain or shine. They are said to warm up quickly and offer plenty of grip from the go and also have good mileage. Now they are NOT an all out sports tire but more a sports/touring tire and as I commute and ride hard at the weekend they seemed the perfect choice for me.

600+ miles down and the initial verdict.
I love em! They far out perform the BT021/023, they do indeed warm up extremely quickly and have plenty of grip. So much grip in fact stopping distances have improved and lean angles also. Wet riding has turned into a much more pleasant experience rather than a bottom clenching one.
And another weird bonus is they look real cool, a fairly unique tread pattern almost mimicking wet racing tires.

Downsides?
Not done enough miles yet but I do think the MPG is slightly higher using these tires but that may just be me riding a little too spiritedly with these tires on and having way too much fun.

Glad to hear this, I should be fitting them on my bike tonight :)

Remember to take care, took about 20-50 miles to scrub in for me which is very quick... old tires were like 100miles before I felt safe.

I'm going 70 miles on the motorway tomorrow night, really easy way to scrub them in with minimum risk :P

20-50 is really low though... feeling confident :D

I ve done over 6000 miles on my road pilot 3s, went through winter on them, i have nothing but praise for these tyres and there is still plenty of tread left and the tyres haven't squared off.

No overheating issues? Graining, peeling, that sort of thing?

I need to change mine soon, it's between these and Maxxis Supermaxx Diamond ones

The pilot roads are better, if you can afford them.
If you can't, the maxxis tyres are still apparently quite good.

Nope not that I can see, if my tyres were not a bit muddy right now i would think that they were fairly new.

Sounds good. I only asked because I remember hearing some rumors about it a year ago when they were new. I fully believe I might actually give up my PR2s...for a set of PR3s. :)

Those PR2's are going to be hard to pass by if available. :D Going on 6,000 miles on my set and looking really good so far.

6k is nothing. My last set got me almost 14. :)

The Road 3's are our biggest seller with sportbike/sport touring/naked bike riders. It's not uncommon or unheard of for customers on liter bikes to be getting 10k+ miles out of these tires. They grip great in the rain. One guy I work with has them on his GSXR 1k and he has no trouble doing wheelies in the rain at highway speeds. Still gets 10k miles out of them.

Excellent tires for highway and sport touring (both twisties and the long haul, in other words). Not great for the track.

Glad to hear the positive reports, one week to go before I get some of these whacked on my bike. :)

I've always liked the Pilot Road 2s. I replaced my front tire a while back because of a nail. The Pilot Road 3s were on sale so I bought a set. I still haven't replaced the rear but the Pilot Road 3 on the front seems great. I noticed the warm up pretty quick and they also have pretty good grip cold.

I went to Pilot Road 2s after a tread separation on a front Pirelli Diablo. I've been very pleased with both the Pilot Road 2s and 3s. Keep an eye on Cycle Gear and Motorcycle Superstore. They have them on sale from time to time. I usually snag a pair if they're on sale even if I don't need them. They usually have sales where you practically get the front tire for free.

I'll be sure to try this out this weekend
