Well my new mic finally came in today. Olympus ME-15. It didn't come with a foam sleeve but was listed as noise cancelling. I fired a sleeve over it just in case (it fit well, no Jerry rigging), and poked it out the front of my cheek pad, and just about the helmet's wind guard.

Those of you used to different placements; do you have any opinions on this setup? Something I should do differently, perhaps? And should I have the low cut filter on or off? I know, my noob side is showing :p

For reference, the small mic that's centred is my scala, the larger one is the recorder. Without foam the mic is quite small.

I used to have the microphone on the right side of the chinguard. Now I have pulled out the cheek pad to find out it's from a solid piece of foam. So I did some DIY and carved out a space for the microphone with the trimming knife. Then I just filled the space with cotton wool to fix the microphone on it's place and to reduce possible wind noise. I just haven't tested it. Also I don't feel sorry for the helmet. It's old and scratched and I'm going to buy a new one soon.

My mic was originally just poking out of the cheek pad. Now it's well and truly buried in there and you can still hear everything fine with minimal wind noise and on half mic sensitivity (Drift HD)
