Firstly, apologies to the users of both bikething and motovlog as this post will be duplicated.

Some of you may have seen on twitter that I had a crash on Sunday evening, it was my fault, i went to touch my right hand pannier after someone behind be did a long (serious sounding) beep on their horn as I have had it fall off before. I don't know whether I then caught my brake or my bars or something (it's all gone blank) the next thing i know I'm sat up against a curb with my bike pissing oil everywhere. It was in a 30 zone just after a roundabout so I estimate my speed was 30.

I thought I was fine at first with the adrenaline still being about, after highways and the police had been I noticed my left arm wasn't doing great, it turns out I've got a hairline fracture right on the ball of my humerous (top forearm) where it goes into the elbow, meaning my left arm doesn't work at the moment and it hurts, lots.

As for the bike, the crash bungs did their job till it hit the curb where it made a small hole in the oil pump cover and smashed the front up. Should be fixable but I'm just going to get it to Orwells in Ipswich and leave them to it.

My gear stood up very well, my flip front helmet stayed shut, I wasn't dazed or anything, it gets 5 stars. I was told by my doctor in A+E that where the impact was on the helmet could well have killed me if I wasn't wearing one.

My jacket didn't do so well, it split at the seams and i got impact damage off the jacket material itself and some road rash on my right forearm. This has changed how I feel about textile jackets at the moment. The D3O armour did a good job and probably saved me from a worse break.

My Hein Gericke trousers avoided most of the impact but stood up well.

My Furygan Jet Evo gloves barely look damaged.

My boots were not damaged.

The important thing is that I'm here, I obviously won't be going to France on Thursday now but hey, that's life.

Current estimates for recovery time are between 2 weeks and 3 months, orthopaedics will tell me more on Friday.

Ride safe guys

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Ouchie! By crash bungs do you mean panniers? ;) Heal up soon fella and I hope the bike is fixed up asap!

Re: Man Down (Pics)

:( Awful! Sorry to see this, france isn't going anywhere though, its just good that you are still here. All the best.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Really really sorry to hear about this Blake, I hope you can get the bike sorted without too much hassle and have a fast recovery.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Man glad to here ya relativity OK ;) Happens to us all sadly at one time or another. Heal up and take care of that arm and do the physio if your given any :) I didn't on a hand injury and now I can tell if its gonna rain as my hand hurts about an hour before.

Take care!

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Very sorry to hear. :(

Just wondering how you got road rash on your arm if you had a jacket on? Did the jacket rip? What brand was it?

Get well soon mate.

It's a furygan, so not cheap, it ripped up the forearm where the rash is, dread to think what 40mph would have looked like...

Ouch.

A textile jacket shouldn't rip like that (I thought), but anyway the main thing is that you're still alive and posting here!

Thats why I put the photos up tbh, what better test of gear than to crash it?

It shouldn't, especially not at such slow speeds. Furygan is cheap...

Sorry to hear about this, Blake. At least it wasn't worse! Like what has already been said, France will still be there later.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

If you hit the ground at 30mph, thats not slow. Textile is usually ok for an impact but i dont think ive ever seen one hold up in any slide more than a meter or so on asphalt. Hope you heal up closer to the 3 weeks than the 3 months! Sorry to hear the bad news.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Really sorry to hear this mate. Am thankful it wasn't any worse though. I hope it doesn't put you off of riding. Take care fellah, feel better soon.

my first off was while wearing a dririder textile jacket. they cost about 180$ aus. my crash was doing about 40-60km/h cant remember exactly how fast sorta blacked out. i tumbled over my handlebars slid across the bonnet of the other car and slip+rolled about 3-4 metres. when i got up my school pants were torn to shreds (i know stupid to wear them) and my school shoes (repeat before) had scuffing and scratching across the left shoe. my glove was scuffed but my jacket suffered nothing more then a black mark on the right forearm.
this was all on handlebars/bonnet/asphalt. i know leather is even better but that textile jacket was pretty damn good considering i still use it from time to time.

compare this to the bike which had a bent right fork (would not compress afterwards) snapped front guard (made of steel) and a bent front wheel. this is all on a honda cb250. which got a replacement wheel/guard and fork and was rideable again without an issue.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Oh man, never good to read something like this :/

Also, you must have either some pretty shoddy jacket or you were doing more than 30. When I came off at 40/45 I slid for a good 10 / 15 ft on my front and the jacket was fine. Might have just been lucky I suppose.

Anyway buddy, I hope you recover quickly and it doesn't put you off ;D

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Gaaahhh...dang...sorry to hear about this happening. There have been an increasing amount of motorcycle accidents this year I feel...even locally.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Sucks about your off mate. Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt!

Thanks for posting about the gear - I've read a few reports about textile jackets not standing up to much - the main reason I wear my leathers 90% of the time.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Your arm looks a lot like mine after my first low side at 30 Mph. My textile jacket held up for the most part except at the elbow I burned through the inner layer of material and nothing went through to pavement. My jeans held up fine, but the jacket and gloves were about toast. Nothing broken but the bike and my gear. Couple months later and my shoulder still feels sore every now and then.

Glad your okay though.

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Blake, you buy a lot of second hand gear, don't you? I'm not saying that you bought a duff jacket, but it's something to think about. I've had a 45mph lowside with a jacket that cost me £45 and I still use it occasionally.

Hope you're better soon, though. If you fancy going to your local pub or something for a catch up, just shout :)

Re: Man Down (Pics)

Bad news, especially about the trip which must be a disappointment. I'm sure you'll bounce back though, plenty more trips to be had, don't worry!

And the best of luck with the recovery...
