Let's talk about Shorts

So I have been tinkering with creating YouTube Shorts and found a mystery that we all might be able to figure out.

First, I can create the short from one of my videos on my device. It shows high-res on my device after I edit it but then when I upload it goes low res. I searched the internet and found there was an option for setting upload defaults on the Android devices but my phone does not show it. I checked both the YT app and the YT Studio app.

Anyone else found the magic upload setting?

I'm with @HippoDrone - I only do my editing on my computer... but no, I haven't seen that issue or heard about it.

For IG, it's under Advanced Settings before you post a Reel - maybe YT's app has the same hidden settings?

If not, I'd suggest downloading the clip to your computer and uploading from there.

I'm now an "Old", according to the kids on social media, so that explains why I don't get some of the phone tech and why people have to use their damned phone for EVERYTHING. What's wrong with a good old-fashioned computer?

Oh, and GET OFF MY LAWN!

Thanks for the input so far but sadly hauling may editing computer and monitor everywhere is not always convenient. That is why I asked about creating Shorts using mobile devices.

I get that - tour packs are only so big!

You may have luck changing your video recording from HD to UHD or FHD, whatever the setting is called - I believe it records in a higher resolution, which should force YT to process in higher res.

FWIW, when I upload my #shorts to YT from my computer, they've been rendered at 1280x1920, and AFAIK, they are "high res" on YT once uploaded.

I record and upload at 4k so resolution is not the problem. The problem is there are how-to articles and videos out there talking about a setting just for Shorts uploads but the app is not showing it..

Here is a short chopped from original footage on a long video that was uploaded at 4k

And here is one taken from 4k that was then edited in portrait layout and uploaded as 4k.

When I watched the videos before finishing the upload they were high-res. But then once I submitted them they went pixelated.

My problem is I do not have the new "create" button to make shorts from uploaded videos, so if I want to make a short I still need to edit it on my PC as a short and upload it directly.

I don't know why I don't have the create button, maybe not all accounts have this feature turned on yet?

The create button for making it off a long video should show up if you allow people to sample from the original video.

A good question is if I sample from you then who gets the money?

That's really odd! The 2nd one definitely is high-res, the first is decidedly not so high res.

Well, I was checking my channel and saw this -

I am shocked that folks like the house so much but my fresh moves barely get a glance:rolleyes:

But this one really does well

I figured it out. The "create" button to make shorts only shows up on public videos, meaning you can't use this new button on private videos. So I do see it on any of my live vids.

It's a handy utility. I made a couple shorts last year (the old fashioned way!) and some of them got some views. I was unconvinced they did any good for my channel though, in fact I think some of my viewers strongly disliked seeing the shorts vids clutter up my channel as they prefer "normal" videos. I wonder if that sentiment has changed at all?

I might make a few new shorts vids just for the fun of it, but I don't see myself making a lot of these again.

Ya, I'm doing the same. Some of the metrics YT uses to push out videos, are based on how well your video does with subs. I think having a bunch of shorts only subs in the long run could hurt long form video performance.

I do the short form on IG, over there, the shorts seem to be the only way to get seen.
