What are you're opinions on this topic.... I don't even know if it's legal in texas. I've read up on a bunch of non sense, and some stuff made some sense, but most of it was bull crap! My opinion is if traffic is below 20MPH then you should be able to filter on through because as a motorcyclist I do not like sitting still on a highway that is backed up for miles and miles and risk of getting tailgated (which we get a lot here where I live) or getting side swiped from god knows where.... So I believe it should be legal but to certain limit.

Only legal in California. :(
Not if I'm about to get hit or need to dodge some people!!
Nope, still illegal.

There was a bill that made it to Perry's desk about 10 years ago that would have enacted pretty much the same rules that California has. Arrogant POS vetoed it for some reason.

It's worth noting, however, that I've had Houston and Austin PD cops, as well as Hays County Sheriffs tell me that they don't care (much) if we ride up the shoulder of the interstate to get through a bad traffic jam on a hot day. So long as you're not one of the retards doing 60 on the shoulder while traffic is going 30..you'd probably be ok. Just watch yourself, APD has a large number of bike cops, and I've seen them do some incredible shit on a bike. 99% chance that they will out-ride you if you piss them off. :)

I hate seeing bikers that do that!! They give us a bad name! Going 70 MPH through traffic when its going like 30 or 25.... No reason to go that fast.... But yeah I have yet to lane split mainly because i havent had the need to (yet).

'tis safer to lanesplit that not....

You get rearended a LOT, as cars eventually doze off and look at the car in front of you, then move forward to close the gap.
If you MUST, stay on the left side of the lane, so you are directly in front of the driver. Better yet is to be "out of phase" with the cars, so if he moves forward, he rear ends the car in front of you and ends up off to your side.

But... here everyone, even cops lanesplit. But with some common sense. if cars are stopped, the max speed is about 43-49 mph (70-80 kph), since stopped cars dont move.
As soon as traffic is slowly moving again, max speed is usually around 30-43 mph.
I tend to be on the lower end of the scale, 30 while moving cars, 40 with stopped traffic.

Except when I'm late. Today was 100-110 mph day with traffic moving at 50mph. Not something to do often.

I filter with pretty much stationary traffic or traffic travelling real slow. I don't if traffic is moving freely at all. And I filter at a max of 20mph.

If you want to see some hazards of filtering, try searching for youtube video "2012 No Prisoners" - it will really make you think again about filtering at speed

Stationary or barely moving traffic for me, although never been on Dual carriageways or anything and come across opportunities to filter/lane split. Out of the little 125 crew I'm in, I probably filter the most.

I prefer to think of lane splitting and filtering as separate things. To me, filtering is moving amongst slow moving traffic in order to make progress. Lane splitting can mean anything, up to and including riding between lanes on dual carriageways/motorways (or freeways in the land of quasi-English :P).

For me, filtering is safe, quick, enjoyable and good for traffic congestion. Lane splitting at speed is for idiots.

Made a small video about it last thursday, so i love the timing

But we are "bound" to some rules while lane splitting/filtering;

This is why it's almost impossible to believe that filtering will ever be legal in many states in the US. Most people don't ride, don't know riders, don't care to get to know riders, and generally just think we're all jackasses with death wishes or evil, murdering, pillaging, plundering gang members. Then they see a worthless piece of shit like this guy, and their opinions are further cemented. When the opportunity comes to vote on or discuss legislation about filtering, this is what fills their minds, and they are vehemently against it. Just listen to the news anchors, they are a good metric of the general public. They're completely ignorant of how a motorcycle works (which is totally understandable) and they're not even able to recognize that yes, the guys watch is broken, and so is his hand(s).

When it comes to the notion of allowing us to filter, in the US, we're fucked. All thanks to the riders that behave like this.

I have yet to filter mainly because i time traffic right... Rush hour is 5-6 I get out of school at 2:30... I work at 1030 get out at 5:00 and I sometimes just wait for traffic to die down so i dont have to worry about all those idiots out there that tend to think "Oh he has a motorcycle, lets cut in front of him!" but yeah I see where you guys are coming from. I need more experience in traffic congestion and then I will start to practice filtering. But the main thing is I do not know if my bike will fit through the middle.... Heres a few pics at different angles....

Easy, i see harley's lane split.
Or honda's and Suzuki's with side trunks on both sides.
Or police and ambulance motorcycle's, which are widder then yours

But from time to time, you might need to wait for people to give you that extra inch you need.

Don't forget, you live somewhere where it's not only legal, but encouraged and expected. The OP lives in an area where it's illegal, frowned upon, and infuriates the cagers. He's more likely to have someone squeeze him, or run him off the road, or try to hit him than he is to find someone who's going to move over and make space so he can get through.

True dat! My dad says dont do it unless you need to because people down here will open there doors for no reason while you are filtering....

Never seen that happen, but I'd bet it would. I've had people push me out of a lane in heavy traffic while laughing about it. Drivers in this country are ridiculous.

Well once I do filter I will have my Drift Ghost HD on and I'll record it haha

Filtered past a police car today - provided you're not being an idiot (I restrained myself from filtering past him at a junction), they're pretty cool about it. I wouldn't ride the bike half as much as I do if I couldn't.

I see a problem, but when people do that here, and they do!
I used drive to the other side of the car, where there is more then enough room al off the sudden ;)

And if you open your door when i'm lanesplitting, you will lose it
