Use what's right for you. I'm a fair weather these days but I used spada for years and years, it's never the warmest but rain and wind never got through

Fishermen wear tights when wading in rivers, so why not?

+1 for any thermal long johns that work for you

I cannot post links, but the Cycle Gear Freeze Out pants have been working wonders for me. I wear them under jeans (commuting) or my Klim Misano when riding distances and they are awesome. Lowest I have worn them down to 14 deg f. for commuting (about 1 hour) and 24 deg f for a 7 hour trip and while my skin was cool to the touch, I was not cold. Before then, I was using some long johns from when I was skiing, and the Freeze Out stuff was a ton better.

Don't skimp on the socks - get some quality wool. Check that they are rated for winter temps. I like the smart wool socks used for hiking. Some silk inserts will help as well, but then you are looking at $50 on your feet. However, cold feet = miserable ride. And the smart wool dries FAST.

Cycle gear has some stuff that is really impressive for the price, I agree.

Many times to email subscribers, they send out discounts and coupons for their house label stuff.

Agree, it isnt the highest quality gear, but man, some of the deals are too good to pass up. That freeze out gear is the tits. I cannot recommend it enough.

I kind of do the

If I buy this cheaper stuff 2 or 3 times, before spending full price for the expensive brand name stuff
will i get the same or more utility out of it?

Oh yeah, and cycle gear just replaces any of their house label stuff for 5 years. Except for damage from a crash

Uniqlo heat tech. I hear that Uniqlo is setting up shop around the world. For warm long underwear, I hear they rank well and hold their own with big name brands. Does England have Uniqlo yet? I know Australia have a few.
