Dan's princess

Whats your thoughts on this??

I agree with him on the road rage thing, I have done it and honestly i feel really shit for posting a rage vid

As for the cancer bit, I have said that from the first time i posted a vlog, There is too much shit out there. Too many guys starting a channel, spamming everyone with links, for something that my gran wouldnt even be proud of.

So, how do we fix this?

These large American vlogers all all to blame. Personally I have unsubed from all but one recently because they are the one spamming videos out all the time because as he says in this video his income has dropped. YouTube income is now about streamers and daily vlogs. If your not doing those you can't make a career out of it.

And don't get me started on the recent copycat vlogers that have popped up.

now why would you do that dan?

@lupin Youtube shouldn't be looked at as a full-time job, or source of income. It's one of the biggest reasons that we sit with shitty vids

Can't say I'm a bug subber of rage videos, if you're not Russian, you're gonna be crap at it ;)

Generally my list of people I sub to has dropped. Partly less time to watch, but a big part is inclination to watch. Can't get in to the videos as much as I used to. Don't know if it's me or the content that's changed from people.

And that's where 99% of the people are. The other 1% have the clear intention of making money out of it. Some feel genuine and others don't. There are a couple of motovlogers that I can't stand because they are so fake at what they do. However they have lots of subs and no doubt make decent money from it.

Another problem I see is there are lots of motovlogers out there but the actual community is tiny.

YouTube has been over saturated for a while now, they are trying to sort the chaff from the wheat with their latest algorithms. Now how this works is anyone's guess? But I can honestly say I haven't noticed a dip in views and have noticed my sub count is still growing even though I'm not posting that much now a days.

It isn't just vlogging that has taken this hit a lot of people have, a lot of the big YouTube publishes have seen their content drop out of the top ranks.

YouTube has been a victim of it's own success and anyone with a cam is attempting to cash in on it. Just look how much rubbish is posted every min.

It is my belief that YouTube is attempting to promote videos with content rather than spam if that makes sence.

Youtube has been shitty for years but the hits people have been taking on all kinds of channels these days are kind of deserved IMO. I don't watch many big motovloggers much anymore because they've done the same thing as every other format on YT.

Taking motovlogging out of the equation look at all of the big, BIG channels. The ones earning millions, and they all make the same content but the only thing that changes is the 'star' of the show. Its all challenges, special guest stars, games, etc. When one video format gets successful like a challenge video then all of a sudden every tom, dick and harry is doing it because they know they're going to make money from it. Instead of trying to be original or creative they stick with a tried and tested route. No-one takes a risk in what to make for fear of not getting the views they want and no one wants to change because god forbid they might piss their audience off. I'm guilt of it myself.

Motovlogging is not dead but the current format surely is. Theres currently a formula to being a motovlogger and its pretty boring. Mine have been pretty boring recently just due to time but even after only doing this 6 months I'm bored to tears of editing plain rides.

All valid points. I recently had a Google Rewards survey come to me about one of my own videos. I grabbed a screen shot of it asking me to rate my own video!

Anyway, I would love to make money at motovlogging or even just riding. That ain't likely to happen so I do it for the joy and try to be artsy a little.

As for the concerns of what is being produced - funny that Jake the Garden Snake is complaining. The few videos I have managed to watch more than a couple of minutes of really turned me off to him. Too much hot dogging on public streets in packs giving the Non-riding public a bad impression of us.

I have had to unsub from a couple of riders for them losing their way. Going from just sharing to look at me to cursing prima dona just seems, well cheesy.

Then there is the ranting about another vlogging style on camera or pandering for their audience either buy this or how much they love them and how much income they are making is about worthless.

So it comes down to artistic integrity or pandering to the lowest common denominator as with any media production.

I agree that the my fellow Americans seem the worst ones with rage videos, almost got caught by cops, pandering, and whining about others videos. Makes me really concerned about our subculture of riders that motovlog over here.

And to bring it full circle, to gripe about not making as much money at it because their market share has fallen makes me want to suggest they need a new career or maybe be more innovative in a positive way.

Off my soapbox for now

I totally disagree with Jake that we shouldn't motovlog. I'm kind of biased, seeing as how I just started. :) Jake, Dan, and others have all done videos saying this lately - enough of a coincidence to tickle a conspiracy theorist's funny bone...

But I agree with Jake on many of his points. Vlogging is a niche, and motovlogging is a niche within that niche. Any schmuck can stick a GoPro on their helmet, plug in a mic, and ramble while they ride. Hell, even I can do it. :D But the key is the quality. I actually went to school for video production, and I think I have a good eye for what looks good, so I'm trying to bring that to my videos. There's a lot of crap out there, motovlogs that I get bored with after the guy does a lot of talking without saying much of anything.

I also agree that there are sooooooooo many copycats. I'm looking for entertainment and/or education (which, by no coincidence, is exactly what I'm looking to provide on my channel). I'm also looking for something unique, either in the content itself or how that content is presented. The tried and true formula has gotten stale, and some new formulas are needed to breathe some new life into this. If I was Jake, I'd be looking for a way to do something new and keep people interested rather than complain about how all my income is going away. Actually, I'm not Jake, but that's exactly what I'm doing anyway!

As I look at it, most of the big guys arent fitting into the definition of of a motovlogger, one who rides a motorcycle and talks about current events, things going on in their lives, or just telling a story. Most of them are either road rage, speed runs, or just acting a fool.

This is why I dont see myself getting very big in terms of sub counts, because I dont cater to the 12-18 year old demographic. I talk about things going on in my life, share group rides with my friends, and exploring the area I live in for people that dont know the area to see what it has to offer. You know, boring stuff to the main internet using crowd.

I like what Sub D, BvG, Tim Kreitz, and Shadetree Surgeon do. They talk to their viewers, take them on adventures, show them the world around them. Not just dork around and scream at people while trying not to crash.

But all that aside, I am having fun doing what I do, even though it isnt on a very regular time table, and doesnt fit into the current "norm". Maybe the community is starting to adjust its balance point now that it has become overloaded to one extreme of content type.

My analytics show most of my audience is 35-44 years old and is male.

I need a way to attract the female audience 21 and up

Filming is the new thing just like when DSLR's became much more accessible and the entire population turned into photographers.

Yes, unfortunately it seems some folks are upset because the room is getting crowded and that takes away from them.

Important to also realize 80% of YT views are outside the US...

Not for me, but that's just my dinky little channel. Still, the US exports a LOT of entertainment to the rest of the world. I mean, look at David Hasselhoff. He'd be nothing without his popularity in Germany.
