Is The First Vlog Always The Hardest?

So at first I was going to keep the camera to record the people that try to kill me every day I decide to ride my bike.
Then I used my phone as an external mic and uploaded my first video.
Now I have a mic that I can mount in my helmet. And here is where it gets harder for me.

How do I even start? What do I talk about? And then comes the editing. I tried listening to one of my (failed) recordings and I feel really weird listening to myself , let alone editing the audio. Something feels really wrong or out of place.

I tried talking about myself and my bike but I am so uninteresting that I was done in 2 minutes.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

That's all normal. I find that sometimes I sound very measured. It is usually because I am concentrating on talking to the camera. When I focus on talking to a person, it is very natural. Forget the camera is there and just talk like your best friend is sitting there listening to you. Do several takes and then play with editing. It will come.

My first vlog was far harder than the newer ones. Editing, talking and riding, topics etc all get far easier with time.

Keep it up!

Well..... I guess it all depends. Just start recording. Don't even worry about you youtube channel or posting stuff. Just get comfortable riding and talking. The content will come. For now, just get comfortable with the act of riding and talking. That's what I did. I'm a lil pissed because I had to reset my youtube channel, so my fist 6 videos were lost. So I started again- last week. The strangest thing for me, was redoing an intro video- when I already did one before ( make sense?).

Good Luck

Just let it flow, most people for their first vlog talk about their bike, why they started, etc. Tho you can begin where you like. Don't be stressed, just have fun!

Remove the camera, remove the mic. Get used to talk to yourself first, then set the camera.
If your brain is focused on the shiny red light, you'll end up with a forced vlog that looks and sounds horrible on the editing room.

Talk about whatever. Don't try to copy anyone, don't try to do vlogs the way other people does it.

Also, get used to your voice, to yourself because you are going to be listening and talking to yourself A LOT. If you are not comfortable with yourself, your audience will notice the unnatural sound.
Do a batch of practice vlogs, don't do something "for youtube", just talk to yourself about something and try to improve. You'll get to the point where interesting, natural vlogs will just come and when reviewing you'll say "Hey, this thing I'm saying here is interesting and well said, I want to share this with the world"..
Also, don't force yourself to vlog, don't even try to stick to a schedule. Being silent on camera is OK, you'll have more motivation next time.

My first vlog was piece of cake for me because I was talking to myself on the bike for months before getting the mic.

for me i was lucky and i made normal vlogs for years. once i got a bike i just did the same thing i always did just on a bike. im addicted now to doing it lol

I had my old channel for a year, got about 3k subs and deleted as I was bored with it.

Dont pigeon hole yourself right away and get it right

If you make a mistake, or don't like the way you've said something, take a breath and repeat it. This isn't a live broadcast, you can edit it out afterwards. You will spend more time editing that you will spend recording the vlog. You need to remove everything that doesn't keep the flow going or goes off-topic. Make some practice vlogs and edit them, but don't upload to YT. That removes the performance anxiety :)

These two points are so true.

Although it's worth noting that the better the source content, the less impact those two have.

Most of the advice here is sound!

Just talk to yourself, everyday recording or not I talk, if I have nothing to talk about I Sing, Singing is really great to build up confidence.

If you work out before stepping on to the bike what you want to talk about (Subject) then just do about 1 or 2 journeys practising (Like dress rehearsals), it is hard to improvise talking for a video, but with these rehearsals you may have said a few things worth repeating. Like writing yourself a script in your mind.

Good luck, it takes a while
