Internet Access Shetland And Orkney

Hey guys, does anyone have any experience with Shetland or Orkney with regards to internet service? There's a slim chance I might be relocating to one of those locations within the next year and I was looking at getting some info.

I've used the BT checker and Sam Knows and they show basic ADSL and a max speed of about 8Mb. I was more hoping for some actual experience of it though as the reality often varies massively from the max speeds. I've been lucky having fiber optic BB for so many years. We were one of the first areas to have it way back when.

I can imagine it becoming an overnight job to upload any vids if I do end up heading there.

I thought the BT Broadband checker was reasonably accurate.

Yeah it is in general on speed etc but the speed is variable. So if they say the average line speed is 2Mb then in practice it can be be around 600k or less peak time and then with ADSL the signal is more adversly affected by weather than fibre optic is so down time is likely to be greater.

i used to work up there man i didnt think it was bad your not rocking the 56k dial up but at the same time your not getting the city worth of people using it and slowing it down might work in your favor but i defo ask providers they will have a better idea

Thanks this is what I was hoping for tbh. I'll definitely give the providers a shout once i know what's happening. I'm not holdin out much hope for the bike if I'm on the way there though...
