so, now that I've passed the test I'm looking for the bike. Now, I know I probably shouldn't be looking at brand new for a first bike but I just hate buying used when it comes to new toys. I like the shiny stuff. I've been looking into starting on a Yamaha MT07 which I thought was pretty sensible and not too expensive.

Anyway, I inputted all of the particulars into a few comparison sites and it came up with 1500 as my lowest offer. This is with the highest excess, the bike locked off road, etc. I'm not a young rider as I'm 26 and I have no points or convictions. This seems pretty high to me. Especially considering the first car I insured was an Audi S3 and that only cost £800. I also think the sites are pretty much bullshit as adding alarms and locks to the quote actually bumped the lowest price up not down.

Anyone got any ideas how to get this down a bit?

Do not go with MCE. They are horrendous to deal with.

I found my first year was very expensive, was on a 2014 Gixxer 600 so I supose it was to be expected. My second year was peanuts though. I agree about MCE though, I was with them last year and they aint the best where customer service etc.

Bikesure and MCE have horrific stories associated with them.

When I got mine is was the value of the bike that made the biggest difference. £2k was a good figure to insure. As for where it's kept, depends on your area, and how you keep it. Out of sight, secured to something or even better in a solid garage. It's all about risk. If it's out of sight, good. In a building, good, secured, good. Minimise the risk, keep potential outlay for the insurers as low as possible, it'll improve your premium.

For example, I have a brick garage and was using a Thatcham disc lock.

I looked at a Deauville worth £2000. £200 premium TPFT

I looked at a Pan worth £2k. £260 premium TPFT.

About double for FC.

Punched in a new Deauville at £8500, FC premium rocketed to £4k...

That's insane.

I've just renewed for the first time, and Lexham came up cheapest again. All the others were way off (Carole Nash, Bennett's etc) all charging me around a grand.
Ended up being £550 with excess protection. Apparently young men on scooters in London are a very "at-risk" demographic -.-

Not bothering with the A2, going to go straight and do my DAS next summer. Come the next renewal date I should have it.

I found that increasing my annual mileage actually made mine cheaper. 4,000 up to 12,000 miles a year.

Mine went up when I went from 6k to 12, although I'd only done 2 years by then.

Might be a fluke but mine was cheaper. Not by much but it was still cheaper. No idea why.

Good bike lock and disco lock. Biketrack gps tracking saved me hundred quid off the bat


And a garage normally helps.

Bike safe course can sometimes save a bit and also be tight on your miles in the first year ec, if you can tell them you do less than 2k a year then it can make a massive difference more of the time

I did my DAS course earlier in the year. Cost me £202 fully comp for a cbr600. Age, value of bike and postcode make a huge difference!!

In Hampshire. Only about 35 miles out from a London postcode but far enough to make it cheaper. Value of bike was insured for £1700.

Keep looking as that does seem rather high to me, as a learner with 9 points i got full comp insruance for 700 quid

£202 fully comp isn't bad. When I passed 3 years ago, it was £193 TPFT on my Deau (same value), just over double FC. Leeds suburbs.
