I Am Really Struggling To Get Quality Audio! Advice Needed Please!

Thanks for the help y'all!

I started out with the cheap lapel mic that Do it With Dan recommended and it actually worked OK. There is a video where I go 82 mph on the highway and there was little wind noise. I did have to speak loudly to be heard but it worked. However, the mic adjusted somehow and I was getting horrible quality during my next rides and could not find that sweet spot again!

So, I upgraded to this Sony stereo mic http://amzn.com/B0058MJX4O and upgraded to real dead cats instead of the cheap foam that comes with the mics http://amzn.com/B00YQBCU5W . I spent about an hour (an entire gopro battery lol) before my ride today trying to get the placement right with the new setup. I thought I finally got it right but when I got home 6 hours later I had maybe an hour of usable footage without wind noise :(

It is weird, it seems to be fine sometimes at 45 mph and other times only fine at less than 15 mph. All the vents are closed yet it seems the cross wind is almost more an issue than the wind from speed. It almost seems to be amplified when the screen is closed for some reason too.

I am using a Shoei Hornet X2 http://www.shoei-helmets.com/Helmet.aspx?Hornet X2&h=25&t=2
Which has a really shallow chin area so if I place the mic there I end up eating the dead cat wind sock thing. So I have been placing it the only other place which doesn't give me a literal headache, between the helmet and the cheek pads on the right side (All the Sena wires and mic are on the left).

I have tried almost all the placement and angles possible and even put some thin foam craft sheets around the mic/deadcat and between the mic and helmet with no results.

The only other thing I have heard and haven't tried is buying a padded bra and cutting out the padding to put around where the mic is. My last option I guess would be too upgrade again to a "noise canceling mic' but I'm hesitating to spend more $.

I made a vlog about this same situation today at 30mph which I thought was a safe speed...I was wrong, all wind.. :(

PLEASE, any and all advice is welcome! Even if it's just a hunch and you have not experienced this lol If I try the bra and it doesn't work I will be out of ideas that don't involve spending more $$ ..getting very very frustrated cause I know wind noise is one of the top thing that turns me off from watching

Thanks for reading and thanks for the help everyone!!

AS FOR MIC ISSUES I USE A LAPEL MIC CLOSE MY VENTS AND TUCK IT INTO MY CHEEK PAD TO CUT OUT MORE OF THE WIND

Thanks dude! But do you have any other advice good sir? that is exactly what I was doing with really bad wind noise.. :(

make sure your mic cover or baffle is not scrunched make sure it is fluffy and make sure it is tight on your mic tip or wind will get in it
Thanks a ton man!! I think the cheek pad is squishing all the fluff down..I also might have to get one size larger dead cat cause the tail end of the mic sticks out just before the wire..

Thanks a ton dude! And already sub'd before from rockets hangouts!

I have the same helmet, I use the supplied foam, I used to have the mic between the cheek pad and helmet on the right side and it was shit placement! Just go watch some of my S.E Australia Road trip series that was the time when I had it on the side.

Now look for my post here https://motovlog.com/threads/what-is-everyones-microphone-set-ups.12622/#post-112782 it has pictures of my setup. The only problem I have is my breathing which was a problem with the old position as well, no more wind noise (at least I can comfortably vlog at 110Km/h and have usable footage) I have the vents open on the helmet.

Do you have the chin net on? I think that plays a key role in keeping out Wind noise

Both mics are the SENA 20s mic which are directional.. Not sure about other mics

So here's what I did; I got a good lapel mic, then I got a helmet with good noise quality (Torc helmets are made with good noise quality, because they're made for communication). Then I put the mic right in the middle of the chin guard, put the fuzzy dead cat on it. Then, I found a fuzzy blanket. I cut out a good sized square of the blanket and taped that over the mic using 200mph tape (I used the metal tape) and I made sure not to get any of the tape on the mic. I'd like to post a picture. Oh well.

Thanks a bunch would like to copy this idea but the chin space in the helmet is too small, I would be eating the blanket or dead cat :( Perhaps doing the same thing in miniature behind my cheekpad will help.

Someone said its the wind beating on the outside of your helmet that can cause noise so if you put foam or thick tape like that between the interior and the mic it should help...the foam I got didn't at all though, just super cheap kids colored craft foam

Ima get some tape like that and try! I just got this $550 helmet so this will be my helmet for the next 5/10 years lol It's fairly quiet inside but the mic pics up sooo much extra noise and the bike is louder than my voice sometimes (and its a quiet bike)

Thanks again for the suggestion and pic!! Let me know if you think of any other advice, ill let y'all know how this works soon but more ideas are always welcome!

So, I've only tried one mic setup, but I have a wired mic from a SENA bluetooth kit in mine. I have the same issue with the chin area being really close to my face, so no room to work. The SENA mic is flat like a watch battery and comes with velcro to attach it. I've got mine right in the front next to the air vent. I get 0 wind noise. My main issue is that it picks up my sniffles, which I apparently have a lot of.

I did have to custom wire the mic to connect to the GoPro though as it came with a proprietary plug. So, it's not a PnP solution.

So to go with my last post, I've embedded my last video SKIP TO 4m7s for the relevant info. the 1st clip I'm going 110km/h (68mph) and the one after I'm accelerating up to 100km/h (62mph) that is all with the setup I put earlier (with a Shoe Hornet X2) Hopefully this can help you Mr R Rider Sir!

Hey hey whats up guys!
I spent $60 dollars for a bower lapel mic and the gopro adapter comes with it... I used that it was ok audio had to talk loud bc of the exhaust...
after being pissed off with the audio I was talking on my iphone with the supplied headphones I was like wait?! this has a mic so I tried it put the lapel mic cover over the "mic" part of the headphone wire and omg it sound soo much better!!! I put 2 mic foam covers and it drowned out the bike exhaust which it doesn't bother much but my voice is soo clear!!! try it out

DUDE. same mic and I ride shoei too. Just THROW THE MIC IN THE CHEEK PAD.

you can remove teh clip with a tiny electronics/glasses screwdriver. Then just shove it in there! The cheeck pad acts as a deadcat. Sound is SO GOOD.

Ahhh! thanks a ton!! Same helmet or just shoei? I think this one is the least aerodynamic so maybe the hardest to conquer wind noise..whoops! lol

I already figured out the clip part BUT for placement do you have to cut the cheek pad? Or you just shove it behind that harder plastic that is a part of the back side of the cheek pad?

Please give more detail before i start ripping up my cheekpads! lol

Thanks so much again! :D :D
