Yeah, the trip meter thing is ok with new bikes, which have fuel light.
I usually tend to check for road signs, when I ride in unfamiliar places. I have been strandes due to technical reasons, with my car, and I know I always should at least have a vague idea, where I am.

Just accessing the controls on my bike requires two hands (or fingers), so not always possible when riding. If I'm in an unknown area I'd hope I'd would have looked at a map before going too. I think the best thing to do would be have landmarks committed to memory, or roads, streets, routes, etc. ... .
