How Often Do You Practice Braking?

I've heard of this soooo many times, but have yet to go out and do it. You go to an empty parking lot and try to break as hard as possible, seeing how fast you can do it and how reactive you can be. Anyone practice this? Or anything else for that matter?

I haven't had focused practice since I first started learning, so about 4 years ago. I should probably try though. More than anything I used to practice cornering, engine braking and throttle control.

I do it now and then, Just while im commuting.
I feel that if i did it in a parking lot id probably drop the bike really quickly cause im trying to hard

Don't have to practice happens most days I have to do emergency stops. It's a London thing ;) But I do test my breaks thoroughly every morning!

I don't practise at all, years ago on my SV650 and my YBR 125 I used to slam the rear brakes on but after getting a brand new bike I can't bring myself to do it just in case.

Totally. I test them thoroughly at least once a day in London.

I concentrate more on general and trail braking into corners on longer rides out of town.

Haha yeah I've seen your guys traffic situation and drivers ....I bet!

Do a track day ;) Best way to learn about your abilities and the bikes ;)
I was thinking about that but I need to pay my bike off before I go and wreck it haha

My instructors always told us to practice, I don't...even though I probably should wear out my tires faster in the name of safety!

I guess there's a saying "never ride faster than you can brake", at least I *think* there's such a saying. Anyways I never practice braking, but yes, doing track days would definitely let you explore your bike's limits (safely), but for normal street riding I trust my brakes more than I trust myself. I usually avoid using the rear (unless slowly weaving/lane splitting thru traffic).

Never ride faster than your angel can fly.

I did a poll on emergency stops a while back and not many practice it, except the Londoners who do it for real regularly. I could be uncharitable and say they do it through lack of planning and anticipation ;) but that would be cruel.

I've asked in a few places if people check when they get a new bike, and not many even then it seems.

You cant really practise emergency stops, yeh you can slam on but your prepared and you know its happening, be a competent rider and know your ability is better than practicing emergency stops. And i always check brakes when i get on a new bike when your going slow just get a feel for them, most impressive brakes was either the 899 panigales or the cbr600RR im still undecided

I practice often actually, I actually have a few sets of cones, large and small and some that I have trimmed down to meet specific needs without them hitting the undercarriage of my car, yes I practice in that too.
For me it is just to make sure I know exactly how hard I mash on my brakes before tires lock. I was a Drivers Training Instructor for years in the Military, and I found that repetitive often equals confidence in ones abilities. SO If I know how hard I can brake, then there is slightly less of a chance of me braking too hard on purpose.
Other than that, you just have to learn from real world shit.

i do it at most stop lights. i'll slow to a reasonable speed, give myself room for failure, and brake hard. i know exactly where my rear tire locks up. so far i haven't locked up the front. not on ashpault anyway.
