How are you mounting the $49 GoPro mic adapter on your helmet?

I have meanwhile found out, that the reason, this adapter is so bulky, is because it contains the same audio processor, as the camera itself. And the newer gopros only accept digital audio in, not analog, as the older gopros, and as garmin cameras.
So not exactly encryption, but still not easy to make it smaller.

Interesting, that explains a lot. Though, it is still a pretty annoying way to deal with it.

If you want to use the one-touch record you can't use an external non-powered microphone. You have to either run a separate voice recorder or use a self powered microphone. When I was using my Hero 5 I got around this by using an older version of the firmware which still allowed it but that isn't an option on the 6
I just tried one-touch record with mine and it worked. It turned on, recorded video (with mic and adapter plugged in) and turned off when i pressed the record button a second time. Maybe you need to update the firmware?

No, it is the later firmware that is the problem. Are you using the app with your phone to connect it? As that counts as having it on standby just the same as powering it on before hitting the record button.
As far as GoPro go, they have done this intentionally and it is in their faq that you either need to power on and then hit record or run a powered mic. I have tested this on both the GoPro Hero 5 Session and the Hero 5 Black with the latest firmware versions and have lost hours of footage when they implemented the change without letting us know. I have actually made a video on this subject showing a fix, but the fix only works for the Hero 5.

Did you get any audio from the recording? As it is only the audio that is lost as it does not power the mic adapter

Yes I get audio from the mic. It works exactly as it should:

1. GoPro Hero 6 is off with $49 GoPro adapter and mono microphone attached.
2. Press shutter button - camera turns on and starts recording.
3. I spoke directly into the mic and gently tapped on the mic.
4. Pressed shutter button - camera stops recording and turns off.

I turned the camera back on and played the file. It had video and clear audio from the mic, including very loud pops from my gentle taps (to remove any question as to which mic was recording).

Could you try it over multiple times for me please as and let me know your firmware version? Maybe it just affects the Hero 5 & not the 6, I assumed that the 6 would be the same.

I really hope mine works as you described yours to, having the camera on standby when not recording is a real pain as recording at 1440p60 eats the battery too.

I am on the latest firmware- v.02.01.00
I did not use the app at all, just hit the record button and go. I’ll record a short test video in a bit so everyone can see/hear how it works.

I made a short video showing how the One-Touch record works with the GoPro Hero 6 microphone adapter.

Normally we don't allow "listed" videos to be posted outside of the members vlogs section, but making an exception here as I think it is valuable information to folk when choosing a motovlogging camera!
The below is a video response I put together with the hero 6 on the latest firmware, I will also show the same experiment with the Hero 5 (which had the same results as the Hero 6 on the previous firmware version I had installed). Neither of my videos are listed, I have put them together just for the forum.

So glad the firmware update fixed the problem for you on the GoPro Hero 6. People helping people - that's what it's all about!

I used my Zoom recorder and I just got myself a Hero5. Sadly after looking up seems like only can use the huge adapter =\ should have go with a hero4 instead. Now i shall just stick external voice recording. :(:(

unfortunately the adaptor is the only option. If you use the adaptor do check out my guide on how to make it work with the one-touch record button1 :-)

I just upgraded from a 4 to a 6. I think overall you'll be happier with the image stabilization from the 5. The large mic adapter seems like a minor inconvenience and a worthwhile trade-off. At least for me.

I just uploaded a video showing the image stabilization of the Hero 6, as well as the mic adapter. You can check it out on my channel.

I attached mine using the good old fashion command strip. It stays put as long as you firmly press the two velcro like strips together and it also makes it easy to detach it from your helmet if you want to leave your helmet hanging from your bike but don't want to leave a $50 piece of equipment hanging out in the open for anyone to take.

One touch recording with the mic adapter definfely wasn’t working. The latest firmware must have fixed it. That’s awesome news!! What really pissed me off is this was an issue with the 5. They released the 6 with the same issue. However instead of focusing on it they released an update to take out third party batteries. That really pissed me off. How about fixing your stuff we paid good money for before sucking more money out of is.

I've also had issues with the latest firmware where the camera hasn't recorded any audio on some vids that were part of a longer recording. It only lost audio on a couple of sections, but bloody annoying that it has the inconsistency

I wish I would've read up more on the GoPro hero 5 before buying it because I assumed the mic connect-ability would be the same as every previous GoPro but of course not they had to add a $50 brick just to fill their pockets
