Ok, so what i have got from the 'gov website' is that if you get your 'license' after the 13th of January the 'new rules' affect you!
But what they fail to mention is weather they mean your full license or provisional.
If they mean full license, thousands of commuters on L plates are going to have to do the full test, im having doubts that is the case but theres no clear answer!
I got my provisional license last year around spring (i think) so will the new rules affect me? one theory says yes, and the other says no!
What do you guys think?

P.S - apologies for all the ' s

I believe the new rules apply to the process of attaining your full licence, as the changes are to do with the riding test.

So you won't immediately be affected by them, but you will be if you decide to sit your riding test after the 13th of January.

The best advice for now is to go and pass your full test ASAP!!! That way you don't need to worry about the changes at all :)

Unless you're 19, where it's best to wait till January because then you're restricted to 47 over 33bhp ;)

Ah I didn't know that, and that's a good point actually, I sure would have liked an extra 14hp when I was on restricted licence :)

Hi guys, i have been struggling with this, i actually emailed them about what it means and what the conditions are im not sure about th provisional rules but at 17-19 you can take a full test for an A1 licence and at 19-24 its an A2 licence.

ill copy and paste the email for you.

As of the 19th of January 2013, the motorcycle categories will be:

A1 - 125cc /11kw and tricycles up to 15kW Minimum age 17

A2 - up to 35KW Minimum age 19

A - over 35KW and tricycles over 15Kw Minimum age 24 (for direct access)

Riders wanting to progress to the large category of motorcycle under the age of 24 will have to go through the ‘staged access’ route rather than gaining the higher category automatically.

Staged access is acquired by obtaining 2 years experience on category A1 and/or category A2, and by taking a further practical test or additional training

direct from GOV.uk

hope this helps :D

Also note, you don't have to do the A1 to be eligible for your A2.

Edit - I'm sure Friz made a really indepth blog post about it on a motorcycle site, ask him for the link.

I got told it's the 19th the new licence comes into effect because my test is on the 14th.

It does change on the 19th.

That's good, was beginning to panic there lol.

Although as Blake pointed out, if you're 19 or older you're BETTER OFF doing the new test.

Yeah but I'm not 24 till August plus the place where I'm doing my lessons at wont let me on a bigger bike because I'm too short.
That's ridiculous. Go to another school. I know some really short people who didnt have a problem.

If you do your restricted licence test now, you'll be able to ride a 33bhp bike.

If you do it after January the 19th, you'll be able to ride a 46.6bhp bike.

That's the A2 licence. It's done on a bike of at least 395cc and 33bhp, but under 46.6bhp. Not a large bike by any standards.

Your decision :) I'd personally wait till the new laws, because you get an extra 13.6 bhp.

Although (because this is something some people get confused about too), if you do the current 33bhp test you will have to wait 2 years before you can anything. There's no option to do direct access once you're 21 anymore to skip the waiting period. If that's what you wanted to do, at least.

If you do the new A2 licence (46.6bhp limit for 19-24 year olds) you'll be able to skip the two year waiting period at 24 by doing the direct access test then. Otherwise it's a two year wait from test pass day and a repeat of mod 1 and mod 2 anyway.

Hope that makes some sense!

I wouldn't try pass the test now, unless your under 19. Problem is everyone is doing the exact same thing and it's going to be a massive waste if you fail before time is up.
