Helmet Mount Vs Chest Mount

Ok boys and girls-

I've played around with both. Like everything else in life, each has pro's and con's. I have to say, I like the helmet mount, but living as a commuter who makes frequent stops in the the city- Its not convenient, as I normally leave my helmet on my bike. Now, cause of the gopro, I have to carry with me everywhere. Not convenient. Thus for me as the urban commuter--- Chest Mount, all day, errrrday aka everyday.

Here is the link to my setup ( old vid)

I'd never have a chest mount as the main camera as you can't look around.

Can't you just un-clip the GoPro? It's takes about half a second and won't need aligning etc when you connect it again.

I'd never wear a chest mount incase I ever come off!

What you normally do is go flying over the handle bars aka you'd end up with a go pro in your rib cage!

Good point....but I get off the bike a lot. The chest mount makes it a lil easier, just unclip and through in my backpack

As far as convenience goes, you can detach the GoPro, including the housing and the 3-way arm, at the base and leave just the sticky mount on your helmet. I think it will take about the same amount of time to attach and detach the camera to and from your helmet as it would to put on and take off a chestie.

I must agree with C&C and dandoolittle. I don't like the chest mounted view because it's so static and quickly becomes boring. It's similar to the dash cams on police cars—I like to see what the rider sees when they see it. Also, there could be action or other points of interest happening while traveling and you wouldn't be able to catch it unless you turn your entire body, which could become a nuisance and isn't recommended especially if in motion.

Another reason to choose against the chest mount is—as dandoolittle says—for safety reasons. If you mount it to the side of your helmet, it is more likely to break off on impact than crush your ribs and vital organs.

@Dan @msrandom. Fair enough. However, not a fan of the side helmet mount. I do like mounting to my chin, that's what I have been doing for the past 5 vlogs. That being said, the chin mount is impossible with the new helmet I am getting. So chestmount it is when I wear my new helmet. Chin mount on my old helmet.

Are you sure?

I have mine chin mounted on a Shoei GT Air using 3 small arms to allow me to have the sticky pad about 1/8th the way around the helmet.

Excellent point. For this reason alone, never do it!

Exactly. As they say, you wear bike gear for the slide not the ride. That should apply to anything that you attach to your body :)

You want mounts that are stuck on, tight and well built so if they hit anything they break off

Good points guys. Yeah, my new helmet will be a AIROH ENDURO HELMET..I don't see a way to mount in the chin area. However- if you know a way- please share!

Sitting with a fly trekker, and have the same issue.. you gotta go top or side mount sadly...

I have a street helmet and am in the same boat as you guys. Tried to look up videos on YouTube about how others may have solved this problem but they all seem to involve screws or cutting away a small part of your helmet, which I'm sure is something you don't want to do to your new helmet. You could give this a try:

That's a great idea. I'm going to check this out.

Can't tell from pictures, but when you get it see how close to the front you can get a curved mount.

Sadly- both flat and curved mount do not apply hear as it has a protruding sharp edge where the chin is. I will post a review of the helmet this weekend, you guys will be able to tell.
