Hello From Eastern Tennessee

Hey all, nice to meet everyone. I've been watching moto-vlogs for over a year and enjoy watching. I'm predominantly a dual sporter (with ADV aspirations :p),but wind up riding mostly on roads despite preferring dirt. I thought that since I enjoy watching them,I might also enjoy making my own. I'm brand new to making, and I'm not the most tech savvy(I have a teenager still living at home, though,LOL :p:cool:),so I've a lot to learn.

I had bought a budget priced Aokon camera last year and kept it in it's box in a closet until last month when I finally got around to mounting it to the side of my road helmet and went on a weekly group ride with some friends. I was able ot get 51 minutes or so of wind-noise filled around town riding, but before the we could get to the dirt part of the group ride,LOL,it blew off the side of the helmet going down RTE421 towards The Snake....I guess 1 1/2 year old adhesive doesn't stick so well,LOL....so I'm currently shopping cameras (looking at a GoPro 5 Black since it seems fairly popular and won't require a 2nd mortgage). While the camera was trashed, I was able to recover the SD card. It's not great, but if you want to see it,search "Small Bore Adventures" on the Tube.

In the last few years I've downsized in bikes, preferring smaller/lighter bikes around town and on trail (I often ride alone, and have on-the-job spinal injuries from 2001). Current bikes are a 2016 Honda CRF250L I bought new back in April and don't really ride on trails much (think mini-ADV bike, not dirt bike),and a 1991 Honda XR250L that I recently picked up to eventually build into a more trail worthy bike than my CRF's setup. I'm not necessarily a "Honda Guy",it just kinda worked out that way lately.

Anyways,nice to meet everyone :)

hiya, stick some pics up of your bikes! :-)
The GoPro Hero 5 isn't without it's issues, if you go that route and want to be able to update firmware etc, then you'll need a powered mic. I currently am enjoying smaller bikes, although about to go back up in cc once funds allow, but small bikes are a wedge of fun! :-)

I still prefer the Hero 4 series for the connection for the external mic. Plus you can go on GoPro's website and pick one one up refurbished for pretty good price.

You might be in @Cave Troll area or @AmpdMoto neck of the woods out in the East TN.

Welcome to the forum!

By the way, what was the red bike in the still photos with the dual headlamps?

Thanks for the tips! Have been looking through your channel, lots of good things there :) The Hero 5 (or 4 for that matter) may actually be a bit out of budget, now that I'm running some numbers (our income was recently cut in half when I was laid off--long story,LOL,but I've only been back to work since February this year after 9 years of being legally disabled, not sure if I want to just go find other work or wait this seasonal layoff that supposedly lasts only 2 months out since I like that work, but anyways...). I may actually look into the 5 Session for it's features and pricing for now, upgrade later. Question,I do have ability to charge things on the CRF now (both a cig lighter plug and a USB port),I know the Session doesn' thave removable battery from research,is this something I can charge that way while out riding (even if it means stopping for an hour break on trail)?

Welcome.

I had a small cc bike once. Why it was fun for a little while I ended up hating it.

Thanks :)

These aren't my first smaller bore bikes (by small bore,I don't mean smaller than 250cc),but that doesn't mean that I won't buy bigger again (I'm hankering for a DR650,but with little budget,I may just look for a DR or KLR650 that's a minor project next year). At 160lbs with old spinal injuries and often riding alone, smaller works fine. I spent my youth racing moto and hare scrambles (on everything from a YZ125 to an XR600R,even owned/raced a CR500R at 1 point) and have owned bigger road bikes (from a couple Harley's to a ZX11 back when it was new in the 90's). Smaller keeps me closer to legal, out of trouble, and both the Wife and the Dr happy :p

I'm not sure,I'll see if I can find their channels and see what areas they're in. I'm in the eastern-most part of eastern Tennessee, about 3-4 miles from the Virginia border,6 miles from "The world's fastest half mile" oval, and a couple miles from that spot the Gyco lizard made his commercial (State Street in Bristol VA/TN).

The 5 Black (or 4 Black, basing that only off Amazon's pricing--thanks for the tip on checking Gopro's site for deals I hadn't thought to do that :D ) may actually be above budget for now anyways. I'll check their site for deals or refurbished, but I may be looking at 1/3 less budget than I thought that I had ($200 vs $300 for just the camera before needed extras).

That's Keith's bike,he co-owns a local (motorcycle) repair and accessories shop. It's a 1993 Yamaha TDM850 if I remember right (I had to ask Doug myself because I wasn't sure,LOL,he's probably my best friend,he's lead mechanic there so he knew what it was that day when I asked). It really looks like a fun ride on road and dirt roads IMO :D

Hippodrone, almost forgot...I no longer have an image hosting site (since Photobucket went to crap and got greedy),how does one post pics here without one? It's tiny,LOL,but my avatar pic is a pic of them sitting together in a friend's workshop :p

You can upload them direct on here "Upload a File" button and then select show full image.

ahh cool, thanks for checking my channel out! :-) You can charge the session from a USB so should be able to. I think Chase on 2 Wheels runs his session 5 off a powerbank stuck to his helmet!

Hippodrone--cool,thanks! I feel dumb,I didn't even see that icon (Upload a File),not even when looking right at it,LOL! :p So a pic of each bike (sorry if the pics are a bit large sized) is being attatched. I hadn'd thought of charging it right on the helmet, might be something I'll look into, thanks :)

As for the camera shopping,I was out today at Best Buy (3 days before Christmas...and I decided that it was a good idear to go to Best Buy......) looking at the Hero 5 Session and talking to a sales lady there that we know (she's helped us choose the right electronics to fit our needs in the past,so she's trusted),and low n behold my Pops was in there doing some last minute shopping (he actually lives about 2 miles from there,so and as an electronics lover,he's always in there). I kinda spoiled my surprise and had to pretend to act shocked, but there's a Hero 5 Sessions under my folk's tree for me already (he was the first person I'd called to talk cams with, him being an electronics junky). Not sure what they got my Wife or the kids,LOL,but I'll be thrilled with my gift this year :D Dad's actually pretty good at this gift buying these last few years...last year, part of my gift was a Roku and a year's worth of sub for Netflix and Hulu (we've added a couple subs to that, besides all the freebie channels),and we use that so much we dropped cable earlier this year.

Anyways, that's budget money that I'll now have for other things I'll need (mic adapter, better helmet mount system, etc). Anyways,if I don't get back on before, wishing everyone a very happy and safe holiday season (we say "Merry Christmas",but also respect everyone else's beliefs)! :)

Ah, glad you sorted the pics, bikes look lots of fun! :-)

Good news re your tree present from your folks, means you got the funds for the mic adaptor now! :-)

I love the bags! If you have not thought of it, you should make a video or two on creating those. I can see some folks finding that helpful.

Thanks, and they are. Both need a bit of minor wrench time right now (I don't have indoor facilities at home to do it,so it's no rush). Th eCRF will be going in to the dealer for a warranty repair soon, and the XR has a pesky oil leak that I've failed to completely stop twice now,LOL,but they are both fun in their own ways. I don't really use the CRF for "real" trails, just ADV type of riding (overnighter camping trips,dirt/gravel or "unimproved" roads with very light trail time),so I had building a decent trail rig in mind when I bought the XR. It's really clean (good condition) though...so I'm torn betwene restoring it stock, leaving it original and low miles,or go with the original plan and project a trail rig from it,LOL!

And yep (on the mic adaptor),my thoughts exactly :D

Thank you :) Good idea, too! It's a little late though,I won't be doing another pair. Really simple though...the racks are from "dirtracks" dot com made specifically for the CRF250L,and the side cases are Ridgid brand 22" tool boxes that were bought for $30 each at The Home Depot. All's I did was to drill the mounting holes to fit the mounting holes made into the racks, and bolt the boxes on there. After the racks were installed (completely bolt-on parts),doing the boxes literally took under 10 minutes to finish.

Where we live,I don't currently have a workshop/shed or garage*. After we lost everything in a house fire back in 2011,we wound up buying a mobile home on a rented lot in a "community" (trailer park ;) :P ),with the plan to buy another house a few years later. Plans modify and change though...it will be paid for in under 3 years,so we may just sit tight and buy land to put it on after that now. Outside looks pitiful,LOL,but we have rebuilt most of the inside to the way we like it (good quality materials and things, and much nicer than any late 90's mobile home we've ever seen,LOL). I had a rent-to-own shed here at 1 time, but I rarely used it for anything and we turned it in and bought a new camper for about the same monthly payment. Since we'll probably stay and pay it off,I'm thinking of building a small workshop come Spring (12' x 14-16' or so),built in a way that we can pay to have it moved when we buy land so's I'll still have it. ANYways,if I do that (build one come Spring),I'll probably do just that, add some maintenance/DIY projects/etc to the channel like you suggested :)
