Gopro Mic Problems

Alright guys,

So my first few blogs have came out ok as far as the technical side is concerned but I'm having trouble with my go pro at speeds over 45-50mph. The camera is mounted to my chin in a case with the side cut out and a BOYA connector and lovelier mic which is wired into my helmet and wedged in between the helmet and cheek pad and is covered with a foam head. Low speed and talking are awesome and the sound of the bike is picked up well but at speeds the outside audio gets choppy although when i talk it stabilises but id like to have some none talking higher speed stuff. Im using a shoei NXR helmet and go pro hero 3+ black edition. Im using the chin curtain and the mic is as far into the cheek pad as it can go so I'm out of ideas. My only guess is that the bona connector sticks out of the go pro quite a bit so the wind may be wobbling it at high speed causing dodgy sound so I've ordered a new lower profile connector but after that I'm out of ideas.

So, any ideas chaps?

Is the mic wedged between the cheek pad and shell? That's how mine used to be set up and it compresses the foam on the mic which makes it noisy at higher speeds especially if the wind is being forced to go around your GoPro and is hitting the side of the helmet twice and that's all the mic can pick up until you start talking.

Are you using the original GoPro microphone adapter? You need to secure the part where the microphone jack connects to the adapter, it should not be free moving, maybe use a cable tie to hold that connection in place. I had it loose once and during high speeds it started flapping about and screwed up the audio.

Its sort of wedged but the foam isn't compressed. Its just as far into the cheek pad as it can go without being squished. if i bring it any further out it touches my face.

Ah that could be a good shout. Im using a BOYA connector that came with the mic. On the go pro its held in place with some sort of mouldable silicon and the other connection is taped to the 3.5mm jack. Other than that its just wedged behind the go pro so ill try securing that. cheers.

If your speech makes it clear up I'd guess some type of noise (wind or otherwise) is causing clipping or some kind of confusion within the GoPro's auto gain control function. It monitors the input level and rides the gain for a uniform input. Sounds like something is reaching the camera that's either a lot louder or a lot softer than your voice.

Just a thought, but have you tried not putting it in the cheek pad? I know that's a common spot, but physical contact with the mic is a common noise source.
