GoPro in real trouble?

Yeah it is easier to record directly into the camera, but the recorder gives you so many options. Mostly the ability to reduce the input level.

but those that don't really do anything with their footage surely don't spend £300+ on a camera. I agree that phone cameras are not in the same league as the high end actioncams, they are now water resistant/proof and don't cost anything (everyone has a smartphone nowadays) With the influx of knock off actioncams that look like a GoPro and record in "4K" etc that can be had for £50 it is destroying the market for GoPro etc :)
I paid $109 for my cam. Including the mounting hardware. External mic support and records great video. I have a Git1. Couldn't afford a GoPro.

This would explain the recent price drops of the Hero 5/6. The competition has closed the gap image wise. Nowadays the cheaper cameras take videos with 80% of the image quality at 10% of the price of the gopro. I've watched a couple of videos between the Yi 4k+ and hero 6 and to be fair. If they were not side by side I wouldn't be bother by the quality as it is just as good.
RJ did a side by side of both, have a look.

Yet I bought a Sony instead of the Hero6 mostly because of external audio. That giant unreliable adapter was a bad decision.
Yea, I use a Drift Ghost-S for that as well.

Also the GoPro form factor while great for a lot of other applications like surfboarding or attached to the dash of a car or sportbike, it is utter garbage for the purposes of motovlogging since placing it on the helmet is awkward AF.

Pity every other chinese knockoff is dead set on copying the GoPro form rather than the ones Sony and Drift use on their action cams.

I really like it for motovlogging, I put mine on my chin piece and it fits very close to my crash helmet which I like. Personally the side mounted cameras are no use to me as they block 50% of the view.

GoPro has been going down for years. Lately their issue is that chinese companies are making the same cameras, with the same sensor and gyro, wifi, blah, blah. It then becomes hard to justify paying $300 extra just for the name.

Also can I say, being from South Africa their new Hero 6 is $200 more to buy here than in the US. Think about that.

Products outside the home country are often more expensive due to import and export duties. 10% duty (say) with added tax as it leaves the US and same on entry to RSA. Then there’s the %profit margin. Quickly ramps the price. Apple dollar price is usually much cheaper than the direct conversion to pounds in the UK

I just did my last MV about this topic, in my opinion Gopro has a captive audience whose want to squeeze the last pixel in those cameras, for hobbies or amateur vlogging i dont recommend them.

your best bet is hoping china rips it off further to be more like the hero-4 black

the adapter Gopro requires now is not just converting the USB-C traffic, its also encrypting it, whether this is an FCC thing or being a public company I'm not sure...

I used SJCAM 5000 Elite, and it was good, but not as good as GoPro.
So I decided to upgrade the cam. And bought Xiaomi Yi 4K. The recording quality is nearly the same as GoPro at 1080p. And this is enough for me. Besides, I have a hundred bucks left in my wallet.

$500 for a camera then if you want an external mic you need a $50 oversized attachment, but wait theres more! You need something to put it in and a way to attach it. That'll be another $50 (at least). We'll release it without all the functions working properly and before we worry about fixing that we'll release an update that kills third party batteries.

No idea why they're in trouble....

The external mic adapter is a joke, but I think I attached mine for around 20p and once your helmet is set up you barely notice it anyhows.

I can't tell you how many times my adapter comes of and ruins the audio for that small clip until I realize its dangling and fix it.

I have made a velcro band that hold the mic into the audio adaptor, works really well. The only time recently I lost audio was because I forgot to plug in the adapter to the GoPro

I was going to buy a new goPro but decided to run with the Git2. Very happy that I did as a few friends of mine use the gopro and once the footage is compressed by YT is very difficult to work out which one is the goPro. They need to bring the price down just a little I think before I think about buying one again. :)
