GoPro in real trouble?

BASICALLY - GoPros takings have been down for years and years. They've got rid of 300 staff etc.

Its cut backs, not bankrupt.

Companies do it all the time

Maybe if they kept up with the market and made an affordable camera like the Yi, they wouldn't have this problem.

I'm also sure the cost of getting all those Karma's back hurt as well.

I think with video recording on mobile phones being so good now, the high end actioncams are too niche to be profitable and with the mistakes GoPro made regarding motovlogers needs with the Five and Six they screwed over quite a large pool of potential buyers.... I'd love a Six if it would allow for one-touch recording while using an external mic. Maybe now it is a bit cheaper it is an obstacle I could adapt and overcome, but it is still very expensive.

Well, while SmartPhones are "good" (which they're not always that great, especially in low light), you can't use them as an action cam. We see it from vlogging, which is niche, but many folk fit cameras to bikes and never go near YouTube as a venture. Their market is all extreme sports, and a Go Pro, or a Drift etc etc are desgined to take the high impact stuff that phones can't, ie they don't break as easily as a phone screen.

but those that don't really do anything with their footage surely don't spend £300+ on a camera. I agree that phone cameras are not in the same league as the high end actioncams, they are now water resistant/proof and don't cost anything (everyone has a smartphone nowadays) With the influx of knock off actioncams that look like a GoPro and record in "4K" etc that can be had for £50 it is destroying the market for GoPro etc :)

So very true as a fellow rider once had his his Hero5 break the mount arm and tumble down the road at 50 mph. It had a case and did just fine.

All I want them to do is lower the price of the session say about $100 au, and I'll get one.

At the price it is at the moment, I can't be bothered with a upgrade of my 2nd camera, as all its going to do is save me a little time in post.

I used to use a SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi and it did great for just filming what goes on every day riding. I think it was only about £60 - £70 and I got pretty much everything I could think off. GoPro and Drift are big names and you pay for the name. But as people have said they haven't helped themselves with the use of external mics latly.

Do I think they'll be going bust any time soon? No but they may have to do some rethinking which GoPro has the funds too

Gopro is overpriced, you can get the same features' camera for only 1/3 of a gopro price, technology and engineering is the worthest part of a company, if only change the color, position, or size of the buttons with the "new" model (like apple does), this is a curse that every company should dwell.

Innovate or dissolve.

It’s a little cynical to say it’s a just a facelift, be it GoPro or Apple. Chips and hardware is updated, the question is the worth of it, and even more pertinent than that is what it’s worth to you. Do you need 4K or higher frame rates? I’d moot that 1080/60 is what most actually need as few people can watch above 1080p, and with many portable devices not even achieving 1080....

One thing a company my wife works for is planned obsolescence. Problem here is the previous models back to the Hero4 have not been made obsolete by technology.

Like the point about 1080p being prevalent on most devices. However, I will say 4k is nice because YouTube allows us to take advantage of a higher bit rate but we can spoof it with 1080p60 and get that kind of bit rate too.

Maybe I should start tagging my vids with Gopro to raise awareness of this underdog brand.;)

GoPro is good but damn the price. Hero5 onwards is not appealing to me at all.. I feel they went backwards with their so-call water resistant body thing. I see my friend's helmet setup with the external mic for his Hero5 is so messy and I look at my Hero4 so simple and clean makes me not even have any feel for the 5 or 6 at all.

What GoPro needs to do is to differentiate itself from the competition in software. No matter how you look at it any Hardware R&D they roll out will be copied 1 to 1 for a lower cost by the chinese in no time.

If they continue to insist on merely selling cameras for a bloated price, they will fall because I'm not buying that shit.

But if they can convince me that buying their overpriced camera means I have a strong software editing suite with support, it's a far more compelling argument that can be used to attract professionals and enthusiasts because the casual market is already a lost cause.

Totally agree with you

This would explain the recent price drops of the Hero 5/6. The competition has closed the gap image wise. Nowadays the cheaper cameras take videos with 80% of the image quality at 10% of the price of the gopro. I've watched a couple of videos between the Yi 4k+ and hero 6 and to be fair. If they were not side by side I wouldn't be bother by the quality as it is just as good.

The biggest thing I think gopro still has going for them is the ability to use external audio. There are a couple knock offs that have the option, but from the tests ive seen/heard, they arent worth using. Most people who use external audio dont want to mess with a separate recorder and sync them up in post. If the competitors can get that issue straightened out, I think you will see a major switch to these cheaper brands.

Yet I bought a Sony instead of the Hero6 mostly because of external audio. That giant unreliable adapter was a bad decision.
