Google Glass whilst riding?

Just reading and article mentioning Google Glass - which reminded me of the HUDs for motorcycle helmets I was researching a while ago. I can see some great applications for this whilst on the bike... Satalite navigation, GPS speed indication vs local limits etc... No connectivity to the bike required?? Big plus!

What do you guys think? I love the idea of HUDs but the current ones on the market seem pretty rubbish (and can be a pain if you switch visors often!).
 
I'm not big on the thought of HUDs for anything motorcycle related. Riding a motorcycle requires an extreme amount of attention to your bike and everything in the environment. I feel having something that's constantly changing in your field of view would take too much attention away from the road and other motorists.

I have to agree. I think it would be far too distracting on a bike. I'll get a set when I have money to burn, but it won't go anywhere near my bike.
 
I reckon the Google glasses will bring with it a whole load of problems regarding tinted visors. They will ban the use of glasses while driving within weeks of their release, or if not beforehand. And that will ripple down to motorcycle riders, and then they'll say that they can't see through tinted visors (though not fully legal in UK anyhows) so they'll ban tinted visors completely and crack down on them. And all because the yuppies want to kill themselves in new and ever-retarded ways. Seriously can't believe people would even consider wearing these things while driving.

How are tinted visors not entirely legal across the pond, anyways? I've never heard of that.
 
I have worn a variety of tinted visors and the only thing is that they are specifically for daytime riding only.
If caught, you would be fined for an equipment violation.

I like tinted visors, but not the thought of changing out during a trip. To get around this, I have a helmet with a tinted sunshield that is retractable. They also sell visor add-ons that are compatible with the pin lock system visors.

It sucks to get a quick blast of sunlight while riding, or have to ride into a setting sun that prevents you from seeing traffic lights...
 
Ignoring the Google product, most disagree to the concept of HUDs? I've driven a couple of cars with them and I think they add value compared to instruments that are not directly in eye line.

I know it would be different on a helmet - but I'd love to try one that gave you the display from the SportVue MC2.

Also - I can imagine Google Glass would be as distracting as using a mobile...

Must allow a certain percentage of light through. Iridium visors are a definite no-no, but I've never been stopped because of it. Police aren't going to waste their time unless you're doing something else highly illegal, then they will just add it on to the charge.

They carry a device that measures the amount of daylight getting through. Wearing it at night is illegal, and highly stupid.
 
I think having a very basic HUD is ok. Something like a gear indicator, camera status indicator, maybe even basic speed, rpm, or fuel level numbers tucked down in a corner somewhere. Those kinds of things have been around for quite a while now and I've never seen anything showing that they're all that bad.

From what little I've seen however, google glass is an absolutely horrible idea. It might be fine for some applications, but not while at the helm of anything with a motor that goes more than 5-10mph. I don't think the human brain would be able to cope with that amount of information flowing through it.

Basically only clear visors are legal for road use. i guess the idea is if you get caught in the dark ect. not many of us carry second visors. however if you do actually get pulled over for it, your probably get away with a slap on the wrist.

Its never normally sunny enough for us to bother anyhow :P


I think the google glasses would be bit of a gimic at best. I suppose its only use could be sat nav, gps speed and maybe we can use it for recording.

Like someone else said maybe when i have money to burn (thats never)

The arm of google glass which houses all the hardware seems too thick to fit inside a helmet. so until its miniaturised to the size of normal glasses frames I doubt its gonna be feasible
