Getting A New Mic For My Gopro

My new Sony ECMCS3 mic should be delivered today. The old mic did not work with my GoPro Hero 3+ because it had 4 bands (contacts) on the plug. I tried a headset with 3 bands and it worked. So I'm hoping the Sony mic will also work. I followed EN187's instructions from YouTube. He added a resistor to a 90 degree plug adapter that connects to the GoPro.

I recently moved from an Audio Technica to the Sony ECMCS3 and I love it. Great sound quality for a mic that is plug'n'play. It is just a bit large to be in a helmet, but you'll find a way to work around that for sure.

Ok, cool. Do you have a "dead cat" on the mic to minimize wind noise? I'm thinking about making some sort of cover to reduce wind noise. The HJC CL-12 helmet is pretty noisy.

Yeah, I have a deadcat on it. It reduces wind noise a lot, but I don't have it mounted in the most ideal location to completely do away with it.

I got the mic today... I'll try it out tomorrow when I ride to work. Hopefully I can find something around the house I can use as a deadcat.

Cut up a clean sock and use that.

Yup, don't ise Swiss' bunk sock...

Heard of some people cutting up a kitchen or car sponge too then securing it with a small zip tie or cotton.

cut up a peice of sponge, works well...alternately go to a craft store and make your own its pretty easy

I used some acoustic foam I had left over from modifying a guitar amp. I stuck the mic into a big block of it and then rubber banded the finger of a nitrile glove over it. Works great. I don't have to use a ton of compression or noise gate now in my recordings. Really kills the wind noise. The downside is there is a purple dick looking thing in my helmet now smacking me in the face.

Am I missing something here? Where do you mount this in your helmet? I'm new to the whole mic thing, and that looks way too big to fit comfortably in my helmet.

I could see using that with an open face helmet...that's about it.
