As many of you know, I crashed my bike a few weeks ag. My Furygan jacket really disappointed me, it's performance was well below what I expected. I contacted Furygan with the pictures and today I received this:

Hello Blake,

Sorry for the long delay in answering.
Our lab had a look to your pictures and gave me some explanations coming from our latest researches due to CE approval processes (the Commando 3 en 1 is not CE approved). We are always moving forward and improving the products.
The main material of this jacket is a material that was, and is still, commonly used in the bike garment industry. But our abrasion tests shown that its abrasion performances were not meeting our expectations anymore. This is why we have chosen not to use it in areas where the abrasion and tearings are stronger in case of a crash (back, shoulders, arms). We also have developped the Skin Protect linings that are reinforcing the main material abrasion and tearing resistancy (abrasion above all for textile products that are not naturally abrasion resistant compare to leather).
Of course I'm really sorry to hear that our product did not perform as expected, though we are happy you had "only" this at your forearm.
We hope you'll continue to place your faith in Furygan products for the future, in case of any question please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

David Robert

What do you think, would this make you buy something else off them? I guess I'm always going to be sceptical now..........

Never been a fan of Furygan equipment, it looks like its made for show rather than protection. But I could say that about icon too ;)

Just my personal opinion mind you.

I would defend Furygan products having worn them often - I think they are good quality products.

But keep in mind that, contrary to many other brands, Furygan do make products of different qualities for different prices. It's not all high end or all low end.

Like the guy says in his explanation, that specific product was not CE approved - I wouldn't have expected a non CE approved jacket to survive better than it did during your crash.

Going further than that, CE approval is a bare minimum for bike gear. Even CE approved gear can sometimes not withstand the abrasion. So non CE approved gear - no chance.

They could have offered you a discount if you decided to buy another jacket off them.

Why?

The jacket worked as advertised basically. Had Blake purchased a £400 Furygan leather jacket, it would have been barely scratched. It's tough but it's true unfortunately.

They should have personally flown out to him on the side of the road and cleaned/bandaged his arm - anything less is completely unacceptable.

On a serious note, I'm not sure if I've ever seen Furygan sold in Australia.

At the end of the day, if it wasn't CE certified then it's my own fault, it did stop 99% of the potential damage from the crash, so I'm ok with that. It just reminded me how unregulated our gear industries are, I could go and bulk buy hoodies, wrap them in a bin bag and sell them as a waterproof motorcycle jacket.

Because In this day in age, people like to save money :)

That's all well and good, but you need to ask yourself, not how much you're wiling to spend on a jacket, but how much your arms and legs are worth to you.

If you buy decent clothing, it will last many years, so the actual annual cost becomes very small in comparison to other costs of ownership.

I do pay quite a bit for my gear. Don't believe in skimping when it comes to my safety! Plus I'm Diabetic so it takes me longer to heal :(
