Full Test Soon (Hopefully)

Hey erry'one,

I've decided that it's about bloody time I did my full test; theory, MOD 1 and MOD 2. I've had my bike for close to a year now, and I feel like I'm ready to get those L plates off.

I've been reading my Highway Code again, and I've been doing mock theory tests, so the theory test should be down, and I think the MOD 2 will be fine, since I'm fairly good and calm on the road (though I need to learn to emphasise shoulder checks a lot more, I tend to rely more heavily on my mirrors). The only thing I might be a bit worried about is MOD 1, mainly the figure of 8 and the collision avoidance. When I did my figure of 8 on my first CBT try, I was pants, like, really pants, and I never got tried on it again; I've been looking for a fairly empty, flat space to try a figure of 8 around my county, but all the roads are either busy, or on hills, which sucks. As for the avoidance test, I've got a big heavy cruiser with crash bars, the lot, and it's not the easiest thing to swerve, so I'm frightened I might hit the cone or something.

Anyway, does anybody have any tips or advice that I might be able to take up when it comes to any of the tests, or perhaps some advice for what to do in preparation? I'm going to the place where I did my CBT tomorrow, as I think they also run the full tests, so I'll be asking their advice too, but any extra help would be much appreciated. :D

Thanks!

Go to a training school. Use their land and get tuition at the sametime.
Use their bike and you don't need to worry about your cruiser.

I wish I could, but I recently lost my job, and so I don't have enough money to do any extra training. It would also be cheaper using my bike, which I'm fine with.

As those who witnessed my MOD 1 will tell you my figure of 8 was awful, but just keep the revs up and you should be fine, remember there's no restrictions on how you do the figure, so you can take a really wide line if you want!

Keep the throttle at a constant amount and control your speed using the clutch and rear brake only. Or do what I did and do it entirely with the clutch :P

The avoidance is all about confidence, nail it in second out of the bend and use counter steering to quickly change direction. It doesn't actually need that much of a swerve, just pretend it's an apex in a corner...just don't quite hit the cone obviously.

I passed it on a day and a half's training with only my CBT as experience. Never owned anything other than my current bike yet I passed with no minors in Mod 1. (And only 1 in Mod 2) Edit: That sounds kind snobby, basically, if I can do it on that then there's no reason why you can't, just be confident.

I was super-duper rubbish at figure of eights when I started riding, but it was cured by (as others have said) keeping the power on whilst using the back brake slightly.

Totally agree with Chrus - clutch control is the absolute key to slow riding control - keeping a constant revs and using the clutch to control the speed is by far and away the best way to manage that. I was complete pish until I got the hang of the clutch. You can do this on the road, going in a straight line until you get the confidence and feel of the clutch - then work on the u-turns and figure of eight.

I suppose the figure of eight will basically just be applying the same sort of power and clutch control as I would in slow riding, but just doing it in with turns. It might not be too hard; I just remember completely forgetting my positioning while going round the first time. Then again, the first time I was also complete arse at riding a bike, so who knows? Over the next few days, I'll be trying to go out and practice different maneouvers (slow riding, good braking, parking the bike, col-- oh, wait... I do this anyway, don't I?). By that I mean, like, "Oh, there's a slight pothole; *drastic swerve out the way*". I'm probably more than capable of it, I think it's just my self confidence that's the problem, which may well be the most damaging thing. Bah, I'll see how it goes over the next few days, perhaps I'll just be fine on the day of the tests?

Just before you do your test, pause, look up to the sky, breathe in deeply and shout:

"I AM THE CAPTAIN OF THIS SHIP!"
*Point at your motorcycle*
"HAHAHA YES. YOU ARE MY SHIP."
*Pass your test*

You're welcome.

P.S. I would very much like to see a video of that if you do it

DO THIS.

All the advice I would give for the modules has already been given

Best of luck
