Do any of you know if you have to forfeit your tags when your bike is in winter storage??? I was talking to the insurance agent and they couldnt give me any info i checked the dmv site found nothing does anyone know??? Super depressed but financial situation made me put it in storage sooner i feel bad for every1 watching my channel but its too damn cold and we are supposed to get snow next week :x anyways if anyone has any idea please let me know

I was thinking about forfeiting plates too. But when I asked my insurance company, they told me I will not gain bonuses because that would make my insurance interrupted (this would happen even if I'll renew the agreement with the same insurance next year). The longer continuous insurance is, the bigger bonuses like discounts or premium insurances I'll get. There are some other terms ofcourse (like no accidents) but it's worth of getting.

But please note that I'm from totally different country then you are :)

Thanks yeah i think some of the companies up here have different policies not 100% sure though....

They said i was eligible for the winter storage plan, so they said something along these lines

drop all liability insurance but keep 500 deductable for comprehensive (tree falling, theft etc.)

you cannot drive your motorcycle while under the winter storage plan

Winter storage plan ends April 1st, 2013 you can call to un-enroll anytime by calling their number

and some other stuff i forgot

Sucks but I would much rather drive my cager of a honda civic around and keep warm this winter lol

Well, I've never seen a circumstance where license plates and insurance are connected like that. You have to have insurance to register the vehicle in the first place, but you can cancel it the next day and keep the plates if you want...the insurance company isn't going to call the state DMV and tell them. That wouldn't be too smart though because generally having a longer period of insurance is better, as mentioned above. Frankly I'd just keep the insurance as is, that way you can take it out for a short ride on occasion should the weather suit it. Also - I've -never- had to give plates back. Not on the bikes, not on the truck, not when renewing insurance or registration, not when getting insurance or cancelling it, not even when changing states from Tx to Tn. Even if you didn't renew the registration right after it expired...I still don't think you'd have any issues, unless you waited 5 years or something.

This is all based on having multiple vehicles in Texas and/or Tennessee though. I know some of the new england states are a bit harder on their citizens than the southern states are, but having to forfeit your registration/plates just because it's too cold to ride? That seems a little excessive...

I have never heard about ever having to forfeit license plates just because you are storing it. I know some states allow you to register the vehicle as non-op for when you know it will be sitting so you can avoid paying too much or having to pay late-renewal fees when you finally bring it back on the road. Either way, you paid your tags for a whole year, so even if you aren't driving it the reg is still up to date so long as you renew it when the time comes.

Yeah so I found out. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said they don't care as long as you have some type of insurance on the bike you can keep the plates =) Going crazy though not riding but also not liking it being 37 degrees everyday now lol

With the DMV, why not just get it registered non-operational? Just say it doesn't start up for mechanical reasons or you just don't have the finances to start it... still would maintain it's clean title, that is if it is clean at the moment. Insurance (is another thing) won't get affected as well, just get it suspended or cancel it.
