So the sprocket suddenly wore or it was on its way out?

Sprockets don't just fail, unless they're knocks offs..they give a lot of warning that they are about to go

He hadnt changed his chain at the time of the new sprocket, it seems it may have had a kink in it, leading to overtightening which stripped his 3week old sprocket clean

you mean he didn't tension the chain properly? I would suspect even after a few rides the sprocket would have shown excessive wear...

Sounds like excuses to me. Kits aren't expensive, I'd personally consider just doing the lot each and every time tbh.

If you've got a proper high power bike like a blade, you're giving the drive punishment, it's critical like brakes and tyres. Drive is so important to cornering stability, why risk it in saving so little money?
