Honda dealer in preston wanted £190 for the tall transalp screen that costs £119 to buy online when questioned they said the extra was for fitting.
£71 for fitting a screen! Is this ridiculous or just me being tight?

Oh god don't worry i am doing! It's mounting a bracket in existing holes and then screwing to that!

Dealers will always be higher than gear shops, and both will always be higher than internet stores. They simply have a lot more overhead to deal with, so you can't really fault them too much. Although I do kind of laugh when I hear them complain about losing business to the internet...that's what happens when your prices aren't competitive. Also, $70+ an hour for labor? That shit's insane. I was recently quoted over $100 for a damn oil change..

Larger internet sources have more buyer pull and are able to purchase the product in bulk at a lower dealer cost, meaning they often are making close to the same profit margin on a much lower retail price. Furthermore, they do not have near the same overhead, as you pointed out.

The other benefits to buying local: you get to try on before you buy (without the return and reorder circus), you get help and advice from a fellow human being and a fellow rider, you are supporting your local economy rather than the economy in another state, etc.

The smaller dealerships are kinda screwed. It's like how Wal-Mart is putting smaller local shops out of business. The smaller shops are not out to price gouge you. They really do not have the same margin, and then add in the overhead... That's why so many small dealerships go under. They're like restaurants: not enough profit margin.

Larger dealerships, like the one I work at, have more buying power and can also afford to compete with the internet. We price match all the time.
