Dumb laws in your area?

Absolute Madlad
Hey everyone! What are some dumb laws that you have in your area? I got pulled over for the elmo helmet cover I have ahaha (Apparently counts as modifying the helmet). Officer was nice and I didn't get a ticket though :)

It's illegal to ride without "three points of contact on the bike at all time" - meaning people get fined for stretching their legs. Stretch one leg at a time, perfectly fine. Stretch both legs, or one arm/one leg or ride standing up with one hand off the bars = you get fined

I remember "points of contact" from my military days also included the rear when falling. Anyone there ask the cop if the butt does not count?:D

Never heard the Three points of Contact law before :O

By law you need to have protective footgear for your exams, they will cancel your exam if you don't have them.
But when you get your license you are allowed to ride without said gear, which always amazed me

I have not found a dumb law yet where I am but I have found a few dummies in the criminal justice system in my former career.

A conversation at the office one evening

Magistrate - "I see where the suspect meets the definition of trespassing but was it 'aggravated trespassing'?"

Arresting officer (old guy) - "Yes"

"How did the person commit 'aggravated trespassing' officer?"

"Well...he kept going back after told to stay away."

Am not sure if it is still the case, but up until recently at least, every London cab was supposed to have a bale of hay in the back. It was also apparently legal to shoot a Scotsman with an arrow in Nottingham or somit too! :D

That bale of hay law would be the last straw for me!

Thats great ahaha like R-rated said, should ask if your butt counts as a point of contact :p

I have a friend in Tennessee that says it's illegal to use a lasso to catch a fish there

Also here in California supposedly it's illegal to store anything except cars in a garage. Hoarders watch out!

According to Chapter 6 of the San Francisco Housing Code, “Private and public storage garages in apartment houses and hotels shall be used only for storage of automobiles.” Failing to comply with the law can lead to fines of up to $500.

[Added by Ord. 399-89, App. 11/6/89; amended by Ord. 161-92, App. 6/4/92; Ord. 350-95, App. 11/3/95; Ord. 256-07, App. 11/6/07]

(a) No automobile or other motor vehicle shall occupy any portion of an apartment house or hotel except in a garage which meets the requirements of the Building Code and other provisions of the Municipal Code.

(b) Use. Private and public storage garages in apartment houses and hotels shall be used only for storage of automobiles.

(c) Separation. See Section 406.1 of the Building Code. When approved, existing separations in existing buildings may be acceptable.

Nothing from me, but very interesting reading up these 1st world country laws :D
Oh we have to wear helmets....sometimes enforced.

Not motorcycle related, but my home town has an ordinance against walking your tiger on the Green. This is a carry over from when we had a larger train station and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used to stop there on occasion.

Some funny laws I'm sure I could dig up in Colorado, but I'll call out the most obvious motorcycle related one I can think of -- illegal to lane filter (applies to 48 states! California can lane split + filter; I believe Utah can filter but not split).

From what I recall in my limited research, lane filtering is definitely safe (gets you away from cars pulling up behind you in stopped traffic), eases congestion (essentially a 3rd lane), keeps the rider cooler in stopped traffic (by allowing them to move through when everything is at a stand-still). It seems to be the main hang up is that people don't like motorcycles doing this, so road rage and ignorant drivers are the problem, not lane filtering itself.

I can't seem to find it, but having turn signals a certain distance apart was a law I recall reading (12" or such). I think my integrated tail light breaks the law as a result. The other one is at least one reflector; I ripped mine off (although I wear reflective gear). So technically illegal; although I think I could argue my gear is reflective and my rim tape is reflective.

Bike related: We have some draconian type laws about where certain types of bikes can and cannot ride. There are some restrictions based on engine size. Example: Smaller, moped/scooter types are forbidden to use marked tunnels. (There's a sign that has a general no bikes symbol with a note at the bottom specifying the type of bike that's restricted.) There's a famous tunnel downtown that doesn't permit any type of bike, 24/7. There are big signs telling you "no bikes in this tunnel" - but it's easy to get trapped in a lane going down into the tunnel. And as you may expect, there's a police motorcycle camping at the other end to catch people coming out.

There are designated roads across the country that are "no bike" zones at certain times of the night. I don't run into these often and if I do, it's usually before the restriction time begins. In some areas, they just close the roads in the evening, until the next morning.

Helmet law here is pretty relaxed - 3 wheeled scooters don't need a helmet. Other guys riding 2 wheel vehicles sometimes have just a minimal skull cap type helmet, that's just hanging off the back of their head with the strap around their neck. I'm just waiting for one of these days that one of them suffers a nasty head injury or that helmet gets caught on something and injures the next or simply destroys their airway. I value my head, skin, etc... I'm not going to be riding a 1000cc bike in shorts and flip flops. :p

so had an experience yesterday that made me remember this thread. I'm currently in vacation in Utah, and they have a law that doesnt allow bar tenders to give taster samples of beer or wine, even if you are old enough to drink. Why in gods name would this be a law? It makes 0 sense

Utah definitely has some odd laws related to alcohol. I recall that you can't get served or drink alcohol while standing at a bar, either. You need to be seated. Interestingly, this might be the new reality everywhere after COVID.

We have a lot of very strict design rules / laws around motorcycle mods. As mentioned minimium distance between indicators but also location of number plates, height of indicators, angle etc etc etc Really makes some real creativity and innovation in the café racer scene etc quite difficult.

The safety argument I don't agree with beause as we all know you could be on a police bike with lights going and people still wouldn't see ya...

As a mate of mine says - laws are for obedience of fools and guidance of wise men. ;)

We have those as well.
I think 18cm between the rear indicators unless stock indicators aren't xD
And numberplate can't be next to the rear wheel, needs to be behind it, and can't be bent in a certain angle, al due to the speeding camera's, can't read the numberplates otherwise ;)
