Drift HD mic problem

Ok I have a little problem that i can not seem to fix. On my external mic for my drift, it sounds like my voice cracks and has a little bit of distortion when i hit about 35+ MPH. I have the mic sensitivity down to the lowest setting. The microphone is not in-front of my mouth and is cover by the side of the padding of the helmet. When im stopped, i do not have this problem, it is not picking up the wind, but only seems to do this when i get up in MPH. Could this be something to do with the mic trying to pick up the outside win noise, so it is boosting the mic?

Also fermware is up to date.

I had the exact same issue with my Drift HD. No matter what I did, when at speed I always had a crackling sound. I tried different mic positions, different mics, different wind socks on the mic - nothing helped. This is what prompted me to buy a Hero 3 and use my Drift as a second camera for bike shots. That and the fact that I had already replaced my HD 1080 because it randomly bricked . . . and then the replacement's battery was DoA.

My honest advice would be nab a new one of the slim form Hero 3+ and stick your Drift on ebay. Alternatively you can hold onto it for easier multi-angle videos later on.

Can say I do not have the problem with the Drift Ghost, so is a bit strange it only kicks in at 30+ ?

May be a connection issue with the male-female slot where the higher wind speed grabs the mic connector and bounces it around a little in the camera

i fixed that sorta issue with a wind / mic sock.

What kind of mic are you using? I cheaped out on mine, and get that same problem if the wind noise is really loud (55-60+ mph). May be the mic itself, not the positioning or wind sock.

Sounds like your voice is clipping? That happened with mine, but it wasn't an issue when my visor was open. Now whenever I want to talk I make sure my visor is open by around 1cm. It's like my voice echos inside my helmet and it's just too much for the mic.

I don't know about the electronic abilities of the posters here but if your mic clips and it's at the lowest sensitivity on the camera setup, you can lower the mic response by adding 1 1k resistor in series to the mic output (actually on any of the two cables going to the mic). You can play a little with the resistor value and camera setting until you find one that works best.

I super cheaped on the mic, didn't get the $20 one sold by drift and the one I got used to clip too often, I was about to open it up and put the resistor but I fixed it repositioning it inside my helmet, closer to my mouth. It used to be besides my ear, got a good voice pickup, no engine or outdoor noise but it was pretty low volume, if I touched the sensitivity to any point besides the minimum it will clip. Positioned under my right cheekpad and now I get almost clear voice but engine/outdoor noise. Depending on how you see it, it can be good or bad. It's good if you like engine noise and if you interact with people from outside. It's bad if the engine noise is louder than your voice.
