Lets all be honest, It is great to think we have a plan (well, 7 of us based on the poll) but when it comes down to it, if we live in a population center with more than about 1000 people, we're gonna die. Might make a week or two by staying put (if we happen to be at home) and filling the bath tubs and every other vessel with water, but after that, bad luck or curiosity will get us killed.
I work downtown in a 38 floor building in the middle of the business district. There is no way I would be able to get out of town and make the 9 miles to my house. I have a river flowing the wrong way on the north side, and I would have to go through the hospital district to get to my house. And through the bulk of the town to boot. Lets add I am not in good shape, so running is right out, unless chased by zombies, and then I refer you to my plan below. Dont care what the movies or shows depict, I have no intention of becoming a mouse who risks everything to step out of their hole every time.
My plan, save one bullet for myself.
All that being said, I have romanticized about being ready, with a few thousand rounds of ammo at the house, multiple guns, even 2 different large war hammers (yes, I have a war maul at 8# and a 2# war hammer, both have the flat, bludgeoning side and the long smooth spike side and made from carbon steel). I have a ton of water containers (left over from beer brewing, 30+ growlers and 15 5 gal containers). Even have the 10# bag of rice and all the camping gear, esp the whisperlight international stove that runs on any gas available. I can stow all this in the only room accessible by a single door that can be completely blocked from the inside. But when it comes down to it, my goal would be to grab the pistols, all the ammo I could fit on the bike, my bike gear and hit the road for far eastern KY out of the damn way of people. As it is my favorite place to ride, I know all the best, least-traveled ways around and have friends who have an "off the grid" cabin, which we use all the time and there is no direct access from a road. But with the bike... But, I still refer to my original plan just above this paragraph... Unless there is plenty of warning (hours, at least) there is no way I am even getting out of downtown if I am at work...
