Hello there,
Recently spicy 110 made a video about Organ donation. So I made a video response to show my support and also encourage people to give blood. Who out there doesn't give blood? If you haven't considered it before, please give blood and you could save lives. My video response is below:

I used to give blood for many years when I was much younger (a looong time ago!), but then they started refusing just for being gay.

These days, people call things "gay" to mean that it's shit, so, clearly, we live in enlightened times and I should have a look and see if the NHS has pulled itself out of the dark ages...

I'm not currently on the organ donor register, however they seem to be bringing in the opt-out scheme (a great idea!), so I'll be a prospective donor then.

I cant give blood! Had a transfusion when i was 5 or 6 and now they wont let me, they are scared i hay have eaten a burger with CJD! NO JOKE!

A man cant even give blood in the UK if you have ever has sex with another man! WTF is that! you can fuck a woman up the arse that's fine! But a man! ohh no you may catch some Uber bug!

I've also got Type 1 Diabetes, but I'm on the Organ Donor registry, and have a card to prove it! ;-)

Just to be clear, it was for being gay, even if you'd never had sex...

Anyway, that was back in the '90s and I expect they're very sorry about it all and welcome us back, now.

I donate pretty often when I can.
And organ donor!
Once I'm dead, I won't be needing them!
The best way I could be remembered is if someone else was able to live on my clicker-thingy or pumper-ma-jig!

And as a straight male who has donated recently in the US, according to their surveys if you've ever had sex with another man since '77 you are blacklisted.

Just checked the UK NHS Blood Donor site:

"You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with:

A man (if you’re a male). Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man (with or without a condom) are deferred from blood donation for 12 months."

So I'd have to become celibate in order to be a blood donor. Would you?

should that not mean that women can not give blood?

does not seem fair really

They can't if they've had sex with a man who's had sex with another man in the last year. Would you know for sure?

seems like total stupidity tbh

if a women gives oral to a male or a male gives oral to another male what exactly is the difference and why should that male be not aloud it.

really quite bad that is tbh think the news would have a field day with that to lol

So if your gay you cant give blood but if youre a lesbien thats fine? A) if your gonna ban gays then you need to ban lesbiens too. Bit unfair. B) not all gay folk have aids/hiv.

As I said earlier, bit picky aren't they.

This is what the FDA has to say about it- DIRECT QUOTE, NOT OPINION!
"In 2010, MSM [men who have had sex with other men] accounted for at least 61% of all new HIV infections in the U.S. and an estimated 77% of diagnosed HIV infections among males were attributed to male-to-male sexual contact. Between 2008 and 2010, the estimated overall incidence of HIV was stable in the U.S. However the incidence in MSM increased 12%, while it decreased in other populations. The largest increase was a 22% increase in MSM aged 13 to 24 years. Since younger individuals are more likely to donate blood, the implications of this increase in incidence need to be further evaluated."

As I've spent more than 3 months in the UK from 1980 - 1996, I am not eligible to give blood in the US :(

A few years back a burn I had on my leg became infected with staph. Not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain that precludes me from ever being able to donate.

Some interesting debate going on here. Apologies I haven't replied been in the Yorkshire Dales without internet connection.

The NHS should certainly allow gay men to donate blood, I mean surely through blood testing they can determine whether or not someone has HIV? Talk about discrimination? The NHS obviously have some sort of paranoia about gay men carrying HIV.

For anyone who's uncertain about giving blood I would just refer you to http://www.blood.co.uk/ website.

Cheers,

If the aforementioned statistics are accurate, it's not paranoia. It's a logical conclusion based on data. I don't see why they can't test the blood though, as you said. If it's a money issue (those tests aren't necessarily cheap) they can always make the donor pay for it.
