Dangerous tailgating and my way of dealing with it this am

On the day that it was plastered all over the news that tailgating triggers a higher penalty, what happens to me this morning?

Being the ornery git that I am, I just slowed down and made him wait. And suffer. As you can hear.

But it didn't annoy me for any length of time, and was a perfect day for a ride to work.

You did the right thing man,
Tailgating as a total dick move. I'm glad they've brought in harsher penalties.

Noooooooooooo

A lost opportunity! You should have knocked on the window, he winds it down and then ask him why he felt the need to sit 2' behind you!

That would have been brilliant!

Re: Dangerous tailgating and my way of dealing with it this

Tailgating annoys me more than anything! who gives anybody the right to bully others out the way! if you are faster wait for the opportunity to overtake safely. When I had my car and people tailgate on a file carriageway, I'd slowdown and match the speed of a lorry and block the road. Would only do this asking as there was no other traffic behind as its not fair on them. Wouldn't do it on my bike would feel way too vulnerable

Thanks guys.

If we had started a conversation he would probably have owned me, lol.

A friend of mine told me once that in his car he would sometimes drop to 10mph and leave it up to the tailgater to get past at a safe - or not - place

No point to have any conversation with an idiot. It wouldn't change anything.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Re: Dangerous tailgating and my way of dealing with it this

Although it is very hard to do, the best way to treat tailgaters is to let them go past when possible. If they are going to cause an accident, it is better that they are somewhere well away from you. In this particular situation, the driver was so dangerous that he was completely over double white lines in order to get past. He would have had limited visibility ahead. If something had turned up or come out of that turning on the right, then his instinctive reaction would have been to swerve left and it is clear what the result of that would have been.

If it is not safe to let them go past, then yes, slow down. Indicate with your hand for them to move back. Many drivers don't realise they are too close and will back off. For people like this idiot, it is certainly better for the overall speed to be low so that, if there is an incident, there are greater chances of survival.

If you have clear proof of their dangerous behaviour, then it can be worthwhile reporting to the police. They so, usually, take these things very seriously...
