Right then, I have some news.

The good news is that the other party has admitted full liability of the crash and as such as agreed to meet my claim. It was pretty certain anyway that that would be the outcome but you've no idea how much weight's been taken off my shoulders after hearing it.

The bad news is the Triumph. She's been written off. Deemed a category C unfortunately. I could buy her back to fix her up but I'd lose a lot of money. Now I know I'm getting at least £6K for the settlement and hopefully £1.5K more for the Retail GAP policy I had in place.

So that should leave me with about £7.5K to play around with for a new bike. But here's the kicker; I don't know what to do. I've gone to have a look at a GSXR and a Ninja at my local dealer (GT Motorcycles in Plymstock) and I might wander up to Barnstaple on Monday to have a look at a DRZ400SM but it still leaves me in two minds;

One
I can buy a brand new Street Triple for £6.8K, get £370 worth of free accessories and carry on with my insurance and service plan as normal. Providing I bought from Bridge Moto's in Exeter again, I'd also have the security of a lifetime warranty so if something went wrong with the bike, then it'd be sorted out without any problems. That'd then leave me with a little bit to pay some money back to my Mum and take the girlfriend out for dinner once she gets back from Switzerland.

Two
I could buy the DRZ or the Ninja and insure either of them FC for under £800. Bargain. The DRZ would leave me with about £4K and the Ninja would give me £3K or so. Both would allow me to pay some money back to my Mum, pay a lump sum to Black Horse for my finance agreement, buy some new bits for myself and still take the girlfriend out for dinner once she gets back from Switzerland. However, although I'd have the standard 3 months warranty after purchase, it leaves me in the **** after that period of time and I wouldn't have a great deal to fall back on should anything go wrong. I haven't checked if I can purchase an extended warranty though.

Any ideas/help/advice?

I would go with option 2. Why? Well I don't know about you but I hate being in debt. You could buy a bike and pay some of your debts off and STILL have money left over to play with.

P.S get a DRZ :)

When you look at it that way that seems like a good idea... :P

Option 1 because of the lifetime warranty. As long as you maintain finance payments you make your money work harder for you so the debt argument is void in that respect in my opinion!

Do what you feel would be best for you.

Forget money. Forget warranties. As cliché and silly as it sounds, go with your heart.

You loved your last Street Triple. You could have another new one to love all over again...

Realistically, this isn't a choice that comes down to a bunch of people on a forum.

You were hit by a truck(so glad you're going to be okay BTW) and you're getting about $12000... If you had that wreck in the US you'd be getting around $300,000-500,000 at the very least if you settled out of court. Probably in the low millions if you had a good lawyer fighting for you. My uncle got 9million for getting backed into by an 18 wheeler.(Crushed his hips and broke his spine) 4mil from the company who owned the property and 5mil from the trucking company. His money earns more money in interest than I make working at a 40hr a week job.

Sry for the spill, just doesn't seem right that you get you bike taken away by some dumbshit trucker that couldn't be bothered to look before turning, now it seems you're getting screwed again with the low monetary compensation. I just hope the trucker learned a lesson about watching what the hell he's doing in the future.

Glad you're pulling thru and getting back on two wheels.

But he is asking for our opinion...

The Street Triple is famed for being one of the most fun motorcycles in existence, if I had the chance to get another brand new one then I'd leap at it.

I've scrapped the whole idea

1. The GSXR and Ninja were both lovely and if I had the extra money, I'd actually buy the GSXR as well as my next bike. Having been back and had a proper look over them, the Ninja had the less aggressive riding style but the GSXR felt a lot more comfortable and better all round.

2. I went to see the DRZ and although it wasn't a completely wasted journey, it wasn't quite what I was hoping it to be. Turned out that it was a DRZ400S with road tyres on it, rather than a proper DRZ400SM which I had thought it to be. Almost bought it anyway but something didn't feel right about it so I've turned that away as well.

Instead I'm looking at a CBR600F from the same place as the DRZ. More expensive at £3295 but it's got just shy of 6K miles on the clocks so it's got to be in better shape than the Fazer and the SV I had which both had 35K+. Plus at that price, for such low mileage/great condition bike, it's a ****ing steal!

A dollar you have, will always be worth less than a dollar you owe (due to interest and whatnot).
I vote you buy used, having some extra funds to pay and spend on your loan and your girl : )

That's it mate, just the bike?
No compo or is that in the hands of lawyers?

Not after your personal business details but thought you would have got more than just Bike money.

Anyways, a good 2nd hand is prolly better, like the CBR or you could get an amazing DRZ for a few grand!!

Money left over is all good too ;)

Good luck with it matey!

Ongoing at the moment Alex. Got stuff to claim back like travel expenses, damaged property and loss of earnings but I've also got a personal injury case going.

Made a decision on Monday just gone and chose the CBR. Too good an opportunity to miss really!

I'd go with the DRZ though I admit I'm a little bit biased. Best of both worlds, if you don't like it as a supermoto you can change it to a dual sport and vice versa. Best of both worlds. The street triple is nice but it will never be more than just a street bike. If that's your thing though, go for it.

Ahh good choice on the CBR ;)

You'll love it I'm sure. Good at everything really, quite comfy for what they are but I bet the not as comfy as your 'old' Triumph.

Anyways, good to hear it's all coming together.

Well done mate, take em like a boss and all that and get what ya can, I think you earned it!!!
