Clutch Slipping? Or Is It Something Else?

I was ridding my motorcycle today and I hit the breaks pretty hard before a corner, there were bumps so the back tire bounced (I could feel it) and I heard a grind of the gears(sounded like a wind up toy being turned the opposite direction), although I had my clutch lever pulled in at the time. Is this normal for that situation or what? It didn't pop out of gear or anything but was just a weird experience overall.

The sound you describe makes me think loose chain. Check the manufacturers recommendation for chain free play (test it on the side stand, find the middle point between front and rear sprockets and measure the distance you can move the chain up and down by). This may also mean that you have worn sprocket teeth (as a result of loose or poorly maintained chain).

Do you just get a ruler and push down on the chain, then measure it or what? Says it should be no longer than 2.28 inches

Just measured it from the chain guide, seems like its within those measurements....although my next big service for it is pretty damn soon, only have 4k miles on the bike.

Basically yeah you should measure how far the chain can move up and down (lifting up from where it is "sagging" in the middle). All chains and bikes are different, some will need adjusting often and some never, I'm not entirely sure what makes a difference!
Chain maintenance is something that will save you a lot of money in the end, I clean and lube mine avery 500 miles - more often even if I have been riding in the rain. That way I've had over 20000 miles put of a chain and sprockets but I've seen them last as little as a few thousand miles.
Moonfleet41 (Delboy's Garage) did an excellent video on the subject, I've used this method for years :)

Thanks! Great video! learned a lot! :)

+1 on the chain. It isn't unheard of for a chain to be kaput after 4000 miles. Check all the teeth on both sprockets, too, to make sure one isn't damaged or they aren't prematurely worn down. Those are not the things you want to fail at highway speed.

Just took it to the dealer (Don't have tools to do chain myself) they adjusted it for free and lubed it up. Told me it was pretty loose, then they took it for a test drive to repeat problem. Of course they weren't able to repeat it, but told me to take it back if it does it again; the guy fixing it has an FZ-07 too...which was a plus :)

You really need to get the tools to do it yourself ;)

Yeh chain is a pretty routine maintenance you should be in the habbit of doing, bad things happen when chains fall or break off, from you hitting the floor to massive ammounts of damage to engine casings and output shafts
