Choke and Other Issues

Well, I almost got through this last pay month without notable issues with the bike. *Almost*.

I got on the bike tonight (around 2AM) to drive home from my girlfriend's house, and pushed it down the road a bit, so's not to cause a disturbance to the neighbours when I start the bike. It was really cold tonight, and I had to sweep some heavy frost off my seat before getting on. Once on, I tried to start it, but it didn't give; put on the choke, and it started fine. Steam came bellowing out the exhaust as it has done recently, with the cold and the rain, but when I tried to put the choke off (slowly), it didn't seem to give up at all on the bike, as it was still revving at full choke. Even when the choke was fully closed, the bike was still firing up really heavily. I turned the bike off and on, and it still happened, now with no choke on. I tried frantically to turn the choke on and off, with loads of steam still coming from the exhaust, and before trying to choke again, I just got on and rode, as I wanted to get it home, fast. Whenever I slowed for a junction, it would lose power, though I revved it up and kept it going. Once I got home after a 10 minute ride or so, the bike ended up stalling on it's own after 10 seconds of sitting in idle, and there was a big smell of petrol. I tried to start the bike again, and this time, I put the choke on for a few seconds. When I took the choke off *again*, the bike seemed to be fine, though I turned it off quickly after as it was causing a lot of noise.

So, my question; just what the hell is happening to this bike? Could it be related to the cold weather? If it helps at all, when releasing the clutch after gearing down to turn at a junction, there would always be this strange, low-pitched "wrrrrr" sound, almost like a moan in a sense. I've never noticed this before, and I'm not sure if it's related to any of this, but it seemed strange. Even slowing down to 10mph on 3rd gear, this sound would still crop up.

I know this post is jumbled, but I'm rather panicking right now, as I really need this motorcycle to keep running. Any ideas on what might be the problem would be appreciated, and any questions will be answered readily. I'll also see how it's doing in the morning, obviously.
 
Sounds to me as though initially the choke stuck open. Also, 10 minutes isn't necessarily enough to warm the motor up sufficiently on very cold nights. Perhaps it died once you were home because it just wasn't ready to idle all by itself yet, it certainly sounds like it was running quite rich at the time though.

I'd say don't worry too much about it just yet. See if it happens again, and if it does then start looking into it.
 
I would try her again this afternoon when she's warmed up a bit as maybe the frost was causing issues. The only time I've had issues of a bike over revving despite the choke being in was due to a sticky accelerator grip/cable so it wasn't returning to idle fully.
 
Hi there DRider, how does your bike handle once it's been running for a few miles? Any better? If so, it's just too cold... let it idle for longer with the choke out before hopping on. It is very cold at the moment, and the air is very humid.

Small (or just air-cooled) bikes generally will make that whirring sound... does hair-dryer come to mind :lol: ? I'd not be too concerned.... if it's anything similar to the sound of a Citroen 2CV it's perfectly normal!
 
could have got some crud in the carburetor if it keeps happening clean your carbs (or have them cleaned if you are not mechanically inclined) ..

There's no time limit, run the choke till the engine is warm and will operate properly without it. Sometimes the choke isn't needed, sometimes it can take 10 minutes..
 
If it was still revving with the choke off there's a chance the cable had temporarily frozen. I've had that happen and it sorted itself out when warmed up. Agreed on the "time limit" Just keep the choke on till you feel the engine's warmed up.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Things stick when it gets cold.
