I was thinking about bike security earlier.

Now all locks and chains are mere deterrents, nothing is infallible. If it's disc locked, it can be picked up and put in a van, if it's chained, the chain can be cut if a thief really wants it.

I've got a disc lock that fits in my glove box, and I've a chain I can take with me and keep in a pannier. Depends where I'm going and for how long.

So what do people think is the best deterrent, and also, what's actually practical? I'm lucky, I have a tourer, I can take bulkier stuff with me.
 
I have the theory all I can do is deter the opportunist thief, so I just use a disc lock but I put in on the rear as I have seen video of a few just picking them up and wheeling them on the rear wheel.

I figure if its on the rear its harder to wheel a bike away on the front wheel when the steering is locked.

I also leave it in gear and turn off the kill switch. Just think it might buy me a little more time.
 
Perhaps using those locks that have the motion sensor alarm that makes loud noises when moved. If thieves already marked it there's really nothing much you can do to stop them. The best is still to park at a busy spot or even pay for vallet parking, or park right at the main entrance or security booth or something like that.

Couple of friends got their levers and brake master cylinders stolen in the past month. One parked in the driveway of his home, the other was parked 20 meters away from the building's security/management office.

Fucking hate thieves. I would gladly forfeit their lives with no remorse what-so-ever.
 
Choosya good location can certainly help.

I'd not heard of levers and master cylinders going though. Nice levers I can maybe understand, but cylinders?
 
Steering locks make sense if you're on a hill... And isn't Switzerland one of the most draconian states for motoring?
 
Nothing to do with security. The Swiss, as I understand it, are quite restrictive with their motoring laws.
 
Yeah that is true, very similar to the UK. You don't have a points system to lose your licence though and just keep getting fines.
 
when im out and about it has a disk on front and read and if i can be ared or dont trust it dlock on swing arm and streering lock. id like to get a clutch lock next say seem small and manable
 
Alarmed disc lock

I also have biketrac GPS tracking, it wont stop is getting nicked but I think they have a silly high recovery rate. You can also see where you've been etc by logging into their website, loads of other stuff
 
Get the alarm lock, cut off the siren and run the wires to a pipe bomb. you'll still lose the bike but the thief will be dead. On second thought, don't do that. Pretty sure to go to jail for that in just about any country.
 
if you have a disc lock it's better to put it on the back. Too many people have dropped their bikes because of leaving a lock on their disc. The back locking up is easier to control than the front (which... probably will put you on your ass).
 
Or buy a reminder canle, even better just remember you pit the thing on in the first place :)
