Best Re Sale Value?

Just wondered what people's thoughts are on the below? If u had a choice of two bikes, both the same and in same condition, one was a 2011 model with 19k miles and the other an 2007 model with 8k on the clock, which would you buy. And in two years time, with another 10k on the clock, which would sell for more money? The one that has 29k but is only 7 years old or the one with 18k but 11 years old???

I had this dilemma but with bikes closer in age. Took the newer as it was the aesthetically better model.

Guess you need to look at the history, condition and bills, plus how you will look after it - dealer stamps etc. Look at older bikes with higher mileage, are they stupidly cheap? Will new updated models kill the price regardless? 2016 in Europe means big changes for bikes, ABS and Euro 4. In fact, an 07 plate bike may be included in the new ULEZ emissions charge in 2020, so if you hit the capital then, it could cost or if you sell, the older bike could be harder to sell. Worth a search if you're in the South East

2011 should hold value more, as it should be 'newer' technology compared to the 2007 i.e. Take the BMW GS series, the 2011 had a more powerful refined engine from the HP2 compared to the 07.
But then it depends on what you want to ride, but I do like lower miles myself - so you can tell I haven't made any money on bikes I've owned.

Personally, unless a bike was a very special machine with historic value, like maybe the first machine that Michael Dunlop won with on the TT, most bikes devalue over time regardless of service history. You will never make a profit off an old bike no matter how pristine you keep it in, or how much you think it is a collectible.

Otherwise if it's a normal bike, try buying bikes that are older but in good condition, older bikes tend to have reached the plateau of their depreciation. And an 11 year old bike will lose less value over the next 2 years than a 7 year old bike.

Too many factors to make a choice like that. But really, resale shouldn't be a factor to consider, the bike needs to fit the purpose and suit the rider. Not gunna buy a bike I'm not too settled on just for resale. Its like those that don't ride often to keeps kms down for better resale. Why the heck do you have it if your not going to ride it? Get the bike you love and want and know will look after you the same.

I sell quite a bit of vehicles on craiglist. Not because it's what i do but because i genuinely and constantly switch vehicles :) Any bike that has little miles is ok. Usually what i do is i calculate the miles / years and check how many miles the bike had ran per year. One big thing is to check the vin using free websites. I had a guy on craiglist try to hide the fact that his bike had been in a collision. For that, i didn't reply because he tried to hide it. Check the vin. check the years. Check owners. check maintenance history if any. One stocker-ish thing you can do. Ask for the name of the person. Do a little facebook stalking and see if the owner has any pics of them doing wheelies and such. This would devalue the bike a lot. Just a hint tho.
