Morning all,

I'm due to be riding some high mileage trips during April for business and pleasure and I want to be able to have my music playing to make things a little less droll on the motorways. Short of looking into finally buying a Scala unit, I was wondering if anybody's had any experience of in-helmet speakers/clip-on headphones that they've adapted? I've got a pair of Gumy earphones which have done me alright so far but I do miss wearing my earplugs at the same time.

I've got about two weeks to go until I leave on the first one and so I'd like to have sorted something by then.

Any help would be lovely.

Cheers

LDR.

I used a pair of JVC headphones and broke the head band off and mounted the speakers at ear level in the helmet. It was hardwired which kind of sucked, but you could always plug it into a Bluetooth transmitter if you want to keep it more wireless.

I've been tremendously impressed with my Shark bluetooth headset:

$100 gets you the pair. As an intercom, the noise cancellation is fantastic. Also works great as an audio source for vlogging! (I use my iPhone to record the audio via Bluetooth). But even as speakers, they work great. No wires (other than the small pigtail that comes out of your helmet to plug into the BT unit), and you can bluetooth it to an iPod or other BT supporting MP3 player, a smartphone, etc. If that's not an option, the headset is just a regular 3.5" tri-pole headset connection, with an extension cable you could plug it into anything.

Cruising 75mph on my Vulcan, debaffled pipes, I can hear just fine. It's not as good as sitting in my car but it'll NEVER be that good, too much other noise (and much louder and you really risk your ears!). It is, however, plenty good enough for a long ride with music. I use it all the time. End of last year I rode 400 miles one-way without stopping (except once for gas around 260 miles), and it was really nice then, just streamed audio from my phone! Bluetooth on most modern devices doesn't drain much battery.

As an intercom, it also works fantastic. My wife and I can be hundreds of feet apart on our two bikes and chat like we were sitting in the living room having a normal conversation, even at highway speeds.

Alot depends on your helmet too. The quieter the helmet, the louder the music! My HJC leaves some to be desired in the noise department, but even so the music is perfectly audible. With a nice quiet lid it'd be fantastic!
